Eh, not really. I have very little say beyond after seeing something trying to get it fixed or removed (often with little success). As to this bug, there’s nothing looking at typing at all. It’s the simple refresh of an ad that causes it, since the “box” around the ad itself changes sizes during that refresh, causing the main issue of the page jumping during the time a new ad is being shown. I need to look into seeing if I can better define the “box” size which would eliminate that if it never changed, but 1) the ad sizes themselves change depending on various factors (inventory, size of screen, etc.) and 2) I just haven’t had literally any time for development work lately.

I don’t want the ads to be annoying*, I wish I didn’t have to run them at all. There’s a longer post somewhere in the last Gen Pol thread with a much lengthier explanation of why I do still run them with graphs and charts. But running them is a current necessary evil and the most obvious downsides of them can be removed for basically cents and one of the better (imo) premium options for a forum of this size.

* The very first ads I tried on this site, selling my own, were exactly the how of what I’d want ads on a website to be; they made essentially zero dollars in the months I attempted that.

 

Not going back and reading pages arguing over ads but if you use the site enough throw in the $3 a month.

so why does the ad refresh only when you click the post box? That’s where I’m confused. Even if it’s not looking at typing, it’s definitely looking at when someone clicks the post box. Does that load an entirely new URL when you do that? Because if not, that sounds like an event listener on the post box object that has a page refresh in the function. Maybe you didn’t write the function that says “refresh the page” but it’s extremely invasive and felt like an unnecessarily coercive way to force users to click / interact with ads they would otherwise ignore. The post box should not trigger ads even for a free user, and I feel like you should address the fact that lots of the ads on this page do that, because that’s taking it a step further than most websites that might just have a drop down ad when you load the page or hover over it, but won’t interfere with your normal usage of the web site.

There are days when it happened EVERY time I click the post box and start typing. It’s a minor thing to be annoyed by but when it happens 100 times in a single session of social interactions on this site it def does get irritating
