Haha I’m just saying. If Witten retired at Gronk’s age then whole career averages would be a cleaner way to compare them. But he played well past his prime and that skewed his numbers downward. the fact that Gronk is still really good right now and looks healthier than ever IS definitely widening the gap though and cementing him in that TE top 5.
My fiance just, in her best example of being a petty little bitch, suggested I buy Randall a poster of a word cloud with the phrase "I die on bad hills all the time" surrounded by his coldest takes. Sorry Randall, this is happening now. I'm gonna drive it to you myself haha
Tacking on years of mediocrity on top of your prime shouldn't strengthen your argument for greatness. Who cares if he played 17 years if for 12 of them he was a JAG lol
Nah Miles was not very good He was a very passable player. Dez was good though obviously once he entered the picture Also if we're talking about good players that became players we joked about later...what about competing with Wes Welker for targets who also had records like this:
@Randall Mentzos - Do you have any way to buy a jug of crisp and juicy sauce, freeze it, and mail it to me in dry ice? It'll make you Beads' favorite. Matt is currently #1 because he has a cute cat.
It’s the other way around - he was JAG for like 5 or 6 of them and it’s skewing down 12 years of being just about as productive as Gronk minus the TD opportunities that matters when Gronk has only played 11 years
Also re: QB trust, there is no one Romo trusted more than Witten and it has entirely to do with how they both grew together in the league. Romo trusted Witten infinitely more than he ever trusted a single Cowboys WR. Sometimes in ways that would cost games.
Randall, i'm done talking about Jason Witten. I'm way more focused on getting my wife the crisp and juicy she was denied.
that’s true but do slot receivers and red zone / possession TEs overlap like that or do they complement each other? Still, you’ve proven to me they had another targets sponge I was forgetting about and idk I just remember Miles being a fantasy WR1 early on before Dez was even drafted. Maybe it was Romo making him way more productive than he ever belonged to be haha
YASSSSS - if you can toss in a chicken breast sandwich without lettuce or tomato too that would be incredible. We went down there to visit her parents and she got into a big fight with her sister and it spoiled her crisp n' juicy experience which is tantamount to denying me a Tasty Burger in Boston.
Apparently we can send you a free Hello Fresh Box and you can keep the food and recycle the dry ice hahaha
You can say "do they overlap or do they complement" about just about anyone that you have as primary pass catchers. But you go to say they overlap when talking about Witten but say they're complements when talking about Gronkowski. (This is before mentioning what a weapon Aaron Hernandez was until...you know.) They're just not that different of scenarios.
Only because of red zone chances though. I see Dez Bryant as being more of a red zone targets magnet than Welker, whereas *aside from a dominant year of Hernandez and a dominant year of Moss*… Gronk was the only guy for like 7-8 of his 10 New England years who would make contested catches for Brady. Im strictly talking about TD production here. Welker wasn’t TD anemic but he definitely played second fiddle to Gronk in the red zone because he wasn’t big and imposing, and more so scored leftover TDs because Brady was throwing 40-50 at the time lol
I mean I’ll agree with the opinion that Witten was the most boring elite TE and Gronk may be the most fun haha. I’m defending Witten though because i honestly think that just cause a skillset doesn’t look flashy doesn’t mean it should be underrated. Witten, somehow, got open so much for a 270 pound dude that wasn’t even really fast lol, and he remained a great blocker into his upper 30s too. like I guess what bugs me is this discussion acting like they’re miles apart when really… they’re like #3 / #4 (Gronk) and #5/#6 (Witten) on the all time TE list lol. I would argue last year with Tampa bay is when Gronk moved ahead of Witten.
I do that a lot tbh I usually contain arguing with myself within the same post and then erase it instead of posting it though
I'm just here to tell you that if you ever go to Harvard or Fenway, get yourself a tasty burger. FOR THOSE WHO ACTUALLY LIVE IN BOSTON THOUGH, GO TO THE AVENUE IN ALLSTON.
Idk last time we had this discussion it was “Witten isn’t even in the same galaxy as Gronk” I’m realizing now that Gronk is dominant again on TB, it’s no contest that he’s better than Witten - but I still feel like Witten gets unfairly over criticized in this debate
