A single rushing attempt from a RB who had a rushing attempt last year (that Ricard FB run on 3rd down).

What a game for Tampa. My goodness.

Just giving Atlanta hope and then utterly destroying them over the course of a handful of minutes.

touchdowns is his main edge, I’m not gonna say he’s not elite in the red zone he obviously is, but if we’re comparing to other “greats” it really helps having Brady though.

yards wise Gronk has had one season where he outdid any of Witten’s seasons (1327 yards, 14 TDs is a pretty damn high peak for a TE for sure!) but outside of that Witten was actually more consistent about putting them up. They have the same number 1k+ seasons (4) but Witten had a lot more 700-900s

We can say that TDs and playoff wins are way more important than yards and that’s true. I have no problem with people saying Gronk is better because he did those things better. But Gronk also no contest has had way more opportunities to do that because of his QB and coaches haha.

I won’t sit here and claim Witten was as dominant in the red zone as Gronk, he certainly wasn’t. But in that same spirit… Brady still would’ve thrown double digit TDs at least like twice to Witten too haha, Witten was a good enough TE to ALSO be Brady’s WR1 on a team with shitty WRs. Touchdowns are opportunistic, so those circumstances matter just as much as Gronk himself being dominant. Cowboys never had shitty WRs so Witten put up the numbers he put up as the second fiddle option - that’s important context if we’re gonna keep bringing this debate up.

Jeremy Shockey was the same way. Never racked up the yards but was a beast in the red zone and in the playoffs.

One thing I love about my friendship with Randall is that I hardly ever have time to be stressed about serious shit because I'm too busy being stressed about whatever hill he's dying on

I don't have the energy to root for a team cuz I'm already arguing too much about this stuff

You know why you give burrow, chase? Because watching some of these rookie qbs, their wrs could simply not get open, part of that is because the playcalling gets really bland because they can’t read defenses yet and part of that is just personnel not being as good as you like so you’re just trying not to lose or lose badly.

Ugh, yes we are. Career averages not counting this year:

    Gronk: 56.6 catches, 848 yards, 9 TDs

    Witten: 72 catches, 767 yards, 4.3 TDs

I’ll deal with the missing 16 catches into the flat haha

averages are a great way to put extra weight on Gronks peaks and also ignore the fact that Gronk hasn’t had his decline yet (which Witten didn’t have until he was past Gronk’s age)

Gronk’s best years absolutely hide the fact his other years haven’t been nearly as productive. Witten’s later / worst years absolutely skew his numbers down from what they were up until age 33. If you compare their year by year stats up to this age Gronk scored more TDs and had higher peaks, but Witten’s more consistent yardage performance year after year puts them pretty close still.

like we can say Gronk is better than Witten without exaggerating the gap between them haha

thats a fair point and this is already looking like one of his best seasons in awhile anyway. But I mean if we’re talking about Gronk’s whole career… yea most of the time he’s absolutely not been surrounded by guys who are gonna take some of his red zone targets. He had like one full year with Hernandez and one full year with Moss and then last year with the Bucs. The rest of the time he’s been THE red zone guy by a mile.

Again I can’t take away from Gronk being very good in scoring range, I just want to also acknowledge Witten’s situation was not the same, he wasn’t in an offense that really needed him to be their main red zone target as badly. Most of the time Witten has had to share those snaps with WRs that the QB also really trusts. (Btw Dez and Miles were a really good duo for awhile; Miles didn’t become a joke until later right?)
