its like a scene from P&R with Perd Hapley or something. “There is a call that will take place but will cover none of the topics you want to know about. Please stay tuned.”

I wonder If the 5 minute warm up thing was just some protocol the refs were taught to follow for a delay but obviously this circumstance was so different so they didn’t know how to handle it. I did notice that despite everyone hounding on the NFL,I never saw any report saying that it was the NFL who wanted to resume play, I think during the broadcast it was just mentioned the refs notified the teams of the 5 minute warmup

It's really really hard not to doomscroll about this stuff but definitely take some time to not do so. Posting that as much for y'all as for me because I've been terrible about it last night and this morning. Love y'all.

The NFL is by and large despicable at the top, and I think we all know that. That said, barring behind the scenes info we don’t currently have, I feel like they handled it closer to correctly than not.

If there was any pushback to the coaches walking the teams off or Goodell insisting the show go on, absolutely fuck the league. But as far as what we saw, I viewed the immediate half hour last night as mistakenly trying to take the “standard” approach to a serious injury and realizing fairly quickly that that wouldn’t work while still having to figure out the logistics of calling the game/ensuring the teams leave/ensuring surprise mass fan exodus happens safely.

Not trying to defend the league really or be Mr. cognitive dissonance as again, they get a lot wrong and it should have been clear by 9:10 at the latest that this was completely beyond anything that’s happened in at least a decade. But ultimately the right outcome happened last night and I’d rather take comfort in that than picking apart what we saw on tv without knowing the conversations behind the scenes.

From what I've seen I agree. There were a TON of logistics that had to be figured out and throughout all the panic going on they are the ones that have to breathe and figure it out and execute properly. I think they did the best they could for this situation.

I give a ton of credit to Zac Taylor and anyone else on the Bengals side who had a hand in the decision making process. Right when it seemed like they may actually try to resume, there was a quick cut to McDermott and he just looked...lost I guess. And almost immediately after that is when Taylor walked across the field to talk to him. I couldn't even try to read lips but it seemed like McDermott was saying whatever was on his mind and Taylor was just completely on board with it. Didn't seem to be thinking through it or debating what was said, just nodding in agreement, basically giving him the "Yeah absolutely man whatever you need here is fine" response.

Like yeah that's the right, normal, human thing to do but you know, it's football and football coaches are not normal. That was huge to me to know that the other sideline was also able to immediately recognize the human side of what was going on and not stick in that warrior mentality they all have

I mostly agree but think that the game should have been immediately called. someone tweeted basically "a mans life is at risk here, cancel the game and figure it out later" - they shouldn't have gone back into those lockerooms with any remote possibility that they were coming back out to play. other than that, the twitterverse just took off and ran as usual, condemning the nfl, pointing out all the garbage and shitty things they've ever done to exacerbate their points. there's a lot of times when i wish twitter didn't exist and last night was one of them. all the information we were going to get or needed to get was coming directly from people on the scene very quickly and professionally right there on ESPN.

    hoping for good news today.

This doesn’t matter at all but I’m just curious if they resume the game does it start up exactly where it left off? That’s gotta be so weird to the players.

it will pick up at the spot on the field, down, and time that the game stopped. it will definitely be odd. i don't think they can start it from scratch.

I believe it would if it happens tomorrow or Thursday, but my gut feeling is that if they add a week 19 for it it would start from scratch.

stats have already been recorded for the game, i know it seems trivial and not remotely important, but they won't start it from scratch. it'll be like a baseball game that continues the next day from a rain delay. top or bottom of whatever inning, 2-2 count, runner on 3rd, etc.

As far as the week 19 thing I feel like that's the obvious solution if the game MUST be played - play this weekend, see if the game still determines the top 3 seeds, then get rid of the SB bye, push the playoffs a week, and have the Bengals and Bills play week 19.

I think there's a strong argument for just calling it a tie or Bengals win given the circumstances as at the end of the day this is all just a game, but we'll see what happens.

Is it possible that they wait and see if it would actually matter based on the week 18 outcomes? Like is it possible that it wouldn’t change the standings?

Would a win loss or tie impact anything with the playoffs or draft order? Truly awful that this has to be talked about, the teams should be the ones decide what they want to do rather than the league and other owners.
