And I was fine with losing Hargrave. He absolutely outplayed his contract here and it was gonna be tough to bring him back. But it’s worth remembering that the team did initially prioritize bringing back CJGJ over Bradberry. We know things didn’t work out because CJGJ was looking for more and the contract was supposedly cheap in the first year or two and backloaded from there (unsurprising, considering Howie) and so they pivoted to Bradberry from there. I also heard, I think of a podcast from one of the beat writers, that they supposedly offered Edwards more money than what he’s making in Chicago. Edwards is from Chicago though so it’s possible he just wanted to go back home.

It seems like they tried to address their current positions of weakness, but their backup plans were truly pathetic. You cannot rely on Nakobe Dean, who fell to the third round of the draft due to size and injury concerns, who also barely played any significant defensive snaps as a rookie, to be your solution at LB. As it turns out, he would get hurt in training camp, then suffer a foot injury in week 1, then return from IR for three games as a rotational LB before suffering another foot injury that ended his season. And to start next to him, you brought in Nicholas Morrow, who is making basically the vet minimum and didn’t even make the initial 53-man roster, before signing Zach Cunningham in AUGUST, who has turned out to be their best LB this season.

At safety, I’m fine with them giving Reed a starting job. It’s worked out pretty okay so far, but to sign Justin Evans and Terrell Edmunds to one-year deals to play next to him and then draft a rookie in the third round and expect safety to be taken care of is a joke. That’s why they traded for Byard and he hasn’t even made much of an impact on the defense! But apparently the dude has built up enough cache with the team in under two months to tell the coaching staff that the defensive players are gonna do their own scouting reports leading up to the Seahawks game.

Just really weak stuff, especially knowing that, at corner, they were counting on two outside corners in their 30s (who both got three-year deals) to continue playing at a high level and were also counting on their slot corner, who has a lengthy injury history, to remain healthy. Neither of those things happened for them.

Their entire plan for the back-seven of the defense has largely backfired against them this season, which is why I think it was absolutely pathetic for the organization to demote and embarrass Desai in favor of Patricia as if the DC was the team’s biggest problem. Now, Desai has certainly had his flaws this season with how he’s utilized some of the players, but I wouldn’t have ranked Desai any higher than the third biggest problem with this team right now
