Why would it be fine? Honest question. Can’t you still spread covid if you don’t have symptoms? And wouldn’t this just lead to players not reporting symptoms, particularly minor symptoms?

 

Yes. But the reality is COVID isnt going away in this country ever. And with variants like Omicron, the odds that an NFL player can go without getting it is basically now 0%. And the other thing we know fairly well now, for those vaccinated and boostered and in NFL shape, is that their cases are going to be largely very minor. So from that standpoint, if the NFLPA agrees and the players have forewarning, they can decide on their level of risk relative to what they get paid.

But suddenly deciding "we wont test people and let spread got unknown" mid-week isnt acceptable for players who have based their home lives on the knowledge of testing. How do you suddenly find new daycare mid-week because now you cant risk leaving your kids with a relative who is higher risk? And its not easy, for a players schedule, to just pop by an outside testing site.

The NFL testing is largely about protecting other people/community spread; and suddenly changing it because it affects some teams games throws that away

 

Basically, prior to this season it was reasonable to think making players get vaccinated (and making it onerous for those that didnt) was gonna be the solution.

Now, its clear thats not enough based on how f*cked our country is. So the next phase is acceptance of risk + taking precautions when possible, which the NFL can certainly do (and would be wise to require masks of players even with the vaccine, for example), but they shouldnt be springing major rule changes in a circumstance like this.
