lmfao. I just always think it’s funny when people try to compare across eras. Like bruh do you realize even having a 2:1 TD to INT ratio was something only the elites did in the 90s and now you have some rookies going 3:1 like it’s nothing

yeah, the stats these days compared to back then are ridiculous and even in 10 years people are going to look at who’s in the hall of fame and wonder why so and so is there because the stats look like shit compared to the current era.

 

also, imagine a rookie QB going 4-6, throwing 1,663 yards 7 TD’s and 14 INT’s. All of espn (maybe all of us, at least somewhat jokingly) would be having that team taking a QB the next year in the draft or signing one in free agency lol

 

Not expecting you to agree @marsupial jones but this is why I keep pounding the table for Minshew lol. So many people talk about his weak arm or whatever but what about, the dude throws TDs and doesn’t throw picks? It’s like people forget that most their favorite QBs were playing a *lot* worse than a 3:1 ratio and 220 yards per game when they entered the league haha

 

lawrence has been abjectly terrible and even then his numbers are a lot better than this lol

 

i mean, what constitutes a weak arm? I hear the term but don’t know what “numbers” are assigned to it. Can he not throw it 30 yards down field? 50? What quantitative data means “weak arm”? Can he not throw to the hash from the center of the field?

so you take whatever it is that he allegedly can’t do and you build an offense around it. Put him on the Ravens and I guarantee Harbaugh works magic with him. Not every coach will because that’s what makes Harbaugh a great coach and sometimes good/great potential players get chewed up by bad coaching.

And even if Minshew has a “weak” arm, still at least throw it “deep” once a quarter to keep defenses honest. Last year that’s what doomed Brees in the playoffs - they didn’t even try to have Brees throw longer than 10 yards.

 

Brady, Herbert, Stafford, Rodgers, and Kyler (when healthy) are as clear cut of a top 5 at the position this season as I can remember

Allen, Mahomes, etc might be better QBs overall, but not in this 13 game sample

 

I still think Elway’s talent was all time great but yeah I used to have in my top five but the more I learned about his career the more I think he is very overrated. I was always just awed by his highlights

 

yeah and it’s not even that he can’t throw a pretty deep ball. He has thrown real nice ones to DJ Chark, off platform, on the move etc. Hes just not gonna wow you with his velocity. He doesn’t have a lot of sizzle so his game instead is planning ahead and throwing with confident anticipation - dropping the ball into the hole in the zone in an arc like he’s playing cornhole basically. But apparently, if his stats tell any truth, he’s pretty dang good at that! Plus he does have improvisation skills, I don’t think he’d have the term Minshew Magic without it.

QBs have built entire legacies from being really good at that those two skills. Throwing bullets is not the only way to catch defenses off guard if you’re smart. It’s not how big and heavy your weapon is it’s how you use it. Even though Brady and Manning and Rodgers etc CAN rip it when they need to, it’s honestly their floaters into soft coverage that are next-level and hard to see coming as a defender.

 

Herbert has had some hiccups, I could see an argument for Dak in his spot and it’s just hard not to have Mahomes in the top 5 conversation. But your top 5 is probably my top 5 this year although I hate to admit Kirk Cousins has a good argument too

 

I don’t think there’s a quantitative “physically can’t throw X yards” and it’s more “you see throws like that ridiculous 70 yard Herbert pass to Guyton last week and the player in question at his best cannot hit on that with the same combination of power and accuracy”

(not necessarily about Minshew, just the criticism in general)

 

Yeah like, every QB in the NFL can throw about 60, but Herbert has a strong arm because his arm’s gonna give you that throw on a *rope* EVERY time, even when defenses get in his face and force him to throw off-base. Not just when everything lines up right.

 

A Minshew or Mac Jones type has to see that play breaking open way sooner than Herbert does and throw it sooner / have it land 35-40 yards downfield instead, in order to pull it off. So there’s fewer opportunities to do that & they have pressure to be ON and ACCURATE when there is a deep scoring chance (if they even see it)

 

It’s interesting

some quarterbacks are good with some styles

but other quarterbacks are good with OTHER styles

Whose style is better I wonder, Dak or Wentz

Feels like he wanted to call a timeout and thought “welp might as well challenge”

 

how the hell did he get that

 

holy shit this just made me think of something that would likely never happen but what if this was true because he realized he would get MORE time with his team during a review than a timeout, so this the challenge loses the timeout but you gain more in the end because you got more time to prepare for the next play (or more) and guys get their wind back

Wired: challenge play to get more time than a timeout

 

Possibly but then if you need 2 challenges later cuz of shitty reffing then idk you’re in a tough spot
