In probability this is not correct as missing the first time becomes already set in stone once it happens and hitting the second time is still a 50% chance. Hitting once with 2 tries is more likely UNTIL the first attempt fails, then it's back to a 50% chance on the second attempt.
There is reasoning behind going for 2 early but I think it's more in line with the fact that a PAT is also not a 100% chance
