Schematically it’s the other way around. They know Kelce is gonna get double teamed and a lot of their genius is how they get him open anyway with sleight of hand and timing, and how adeptly he improvises based on the look. There’s a lot of times his actual route would’ve got smothered but he just did something else right when the LB and CB were about to trade off responsibility in coverage, and Mahomes was on the same page. He’s Julian Edelman-good at spacing and option routes. These are a lot of these cherry picked Twitter screenshots of him being “left wide open” that don’t recognize what he did to GET open

when they are throwing to MVS and Pacheco it isn’t because they schemed something for them, it’s because the defense is leaving that shit wide open and they noticed. lol. That’s the difference. I think it’s easier to win that way than it is to constantly reinvent the TE that all competitive teams are already watching tape on all year

 

Yes, and I’m perfectly happy with them throwing to those guys. Every throw Mahomes makes to MVS, Toney, or Pacheco is a win for me.

Of these 6, only 2, 5, and 6 are true double teams.

2 and 6 were examples of exactly what I was talking about - Cover 1 is basically the only play you can safely call with a double team on the tight end.

5 is an example of me saying what not to do to Dave - three guys followed Kelce in Cover 0 and guess what happened? MVS got VERY open deep downfield, Pat saw it and threw a perfect ball, and his drop on that play is the only reason KC didn’t win the game right there. It could’ve been designed, or a miscommunication, but KC showed them immediately thats not gonna work, they’re lucky it didn’t turn into an L.

1 and 4 are Cover 1 Robber, the other thing I brought up last night that I said would be my main strategy for taking away Kelce on important downs. The robber zone’s natural responsibility takes away a lot of TE routes over the middle in general, but it’s not a double team. Safety wouldn’t follow Kelce on a crossing or sideline route.

3 is just a wrinkle play designed by Reid where Kelce intentionally ran into a second defender to set a pick.

 

Also interesting and relevant, he was not jammed at the line on any of those 6 plays
