In general you're right. I think there's another dimension which is clock control which is where you have to either look at more stats or eye test it. Was the game close because it went to the wire or was it close because one team knew how to bleed it out?

But yes all this debate is with 0 games with Sauce on the roster so we'll see how the defense transforms, which I do anticipate will be positively but idk how strongly in that direction

 

It’s not that I expect them to dominate everything I just wanna see more of how they play when they can’t dominate, that’s all.

we know the Colts are a “good” team but when we’re asking “are they a team that’s gonna lose more games second half of the year and potentially be a first round exit” or “are they an AFC powerhouse that’s gonna keep winning like this and finish 13-4 with a top 2 or top 3 seed”, things like “is Jonathan Taylor gonna keep being effective or will he have more games like PIT where he gets stuffed and the Colts have to pivot” start to factor in. IMO it wasn’t a good sign that the only game JT didn’t top 50 yards, their offense committed SIX turnovers lol

 

yeah and I know we all hate Sean Payton for good reason yadda yadda but if we are watching Broncos games and thinking “they lucked out to win this one” instead of “Payton really bled that clock once they got a small lead”, idk, maybe more credit belongs to the latter

 

So much of football RELIES on stopping the run early in the game and forcing the opposing offense to lose a little bit of trust in it and change their game script. If that’s all you have to do to beat the Colts… I mean it’s not like stopping JT is easy, it’s clearly NOT lol… but playoff defenses are capable of doing so.

I don’t fully disagree, there’s some element of contextualization behind the Broncos’ final drive having a much more positive likelihood to win during that final drive/4ish minutes than a game that shifts possession multiple times in the final few minutes and “one score game” is a pretty wide generalization

but even then, Sean Payton’s Broncos were 1-6 in one score games last year and I don’t think the teams are fundamentally different in terms of key players, nor do I think the Broncos suddenly got “good again” at closing out big games

I do wanna be clear, sometimes my long posts make my opinion seem harsher than it is. The only reason I’m having all these critiques of the Colts and praises of the Broncos is not because I think the Colts are bad and the Broncos are going to the Super Bowl lmao. It’s more my response to, in my opinion, giving the Colts too much credit when they still have questions, and discrediting the Broncos too much when they’ve clearly proven something by now. I did say at the beginning of this discussion I thought they were pretty evenly matched and that Sauce gives Colts the edge. That is still my opinion.

Within that opinion it is also very possible that the Broncos can actually hang tough with teams their offense has no business competing with, and that the Colts offense might be one to panic and respond poorly when their bread and butter strategy (wearing down opponents with JT) gets thwarted by another good team. But I could also be wrong about both these things.

 

i don't wanna look it up but i've seen people occasionally look up what everyone's records would be if you flipped the victor of one score games and it's usually interesting

for instance the 2024 chiefs would have been 4-13 (assuming you keep the bigger losses to buffalo and kinda denver the same)

 

Denver was that team last year but so far they are figuring ways to win the close ones this season. I dont like that style but its better than the alternative.

 

Unless it’s because the refs in which case it’s a win even if it’s a loss
