Stafford’s third season was the first one he played all 16. 5k yards, 41-16 TD/Int ratio and I’m pretty sure it’s the year he had that sick mic’d up moment. Trevor Lawrence could never.

Baker Mayfield & Sam Darnold sorta kinda just did it.

I feel like Lawrence did break out his sophomore year and led them on a good run into playoffs and was a a Jamaal Agnew mess up away from an AFC championship game. But since then …. injury after injury and dud after dud.

It’s been a disappointing career based off expectations but he’s like still 25. I think a Justin Herbert career arc is in play and a top 12-15 QB is fine to be at this point

Wow I did not remember that Stafford only played 13 games his first 2 seasons due to injuries.

then had the 5k season in year 3

  7. The only thing Lawrence and Stafford have in common IMO is being drafted to dysfunctional (at the time for Detroit) franchises

meh, Baker in his 3rd year had a better year than Lawrence has had as a pro (or at least comparable)

    fair enough though

I mean, there’s always outliers. But for every Baker there’s 15 Mac Jones lol

I just think it’s time to stop expecting Lawrence to be more than he is. A perfectly okay starting QB.

And he’ll still end up as the best qb in 30 years of Jags “football”

Trevor’s second season was really good. It was the only time under Doug that Doug actually called the plays.

The player he was drafted to be is like, an expected ceiling of top 10 in the league and I do think he’s still in there.

I think initially, people wrongfully expected him to be top 3 or 4 in the league like Andrew Luck was - and he’s never had that exceptional of anticipation or pocket presence, that’s where the expectations of Lawrence being a Golden God were unrealistic. Luck came from a pro-style offense at Stanford where he had to do things the hard way to win because they had recruiting disadvantages against top P5C teams… while Trevor cut his teeth in a very gimmicky offense at Clemson that DID have an athletic advantage to lean on with its skill position players, so he didn’t get that much of a head start on what NFL playcalling is like (imagine if he had Joe Brady instead).

but he’s like the next tier down for sure - at his best he has every skill you want from a pro QB. He gets rid of the ball fast, his pocket awareness is very good and his pocket shifts are subtle, he can threaten with his legs, he can rip it 60 yards on a rope, he understands touch vs velocity, he can throw with anticipation in most situations (this is his biggest area of growth but he shows it often enough to believe he knows how to do it) and if he is settled down and comfortable he’s very accurate.

It’s very easy to imagine a year of Urban Meyer and two years of Press Taylor making him play more like a fringe top 20 QB until he finally gets to be in an offense that “clicks” for real. But his 2022 form is just a decent offensive line, decent receivers, and non-shitty playcalling away from returning.

But 2022 him was simply just good, not anything crazy. That's the entire point. If all he is is 2022 him, he's in the 12-16 range in the league in all likelihood. Which again is fine.

4100 yards and a 3:1 TD/INT ratio with Christian Kirk as your WR1 is pretty good. And he actually started that year rough and had way fucking better numbers down the stretch. And then he continued that high level of play for half of 2023 until Press Taylor got figured out

I also don’t think the jags fans here are, anymore, projecting him as a top 5-6 QB lol

Feel like everyone is reasonably putting him in the 12-20 range because it’s a giant cluster of QB’s who could be good/fine/whatever and in this day and age that’s a fine place to be

He was fringe top 10 that season. Probably right at #10 or #11 maybe, but still.

If he can return to that, Jags will be competitive. If he can build on that, Jags can start stacking winning seasons together back to back.

    2022 Trevor
    13th in completion %
    9th in yards
    10th in touchdowns
    12th in success rate

    good not great

And also four comebacks that all had the Jags down by 3 scores+ in the 4th quarter. He showed he can be clutch too on top of those fringe top 10 numbers.

Jesus Christ I forgot how good that Mahomes season was lol 500 more yards than everyone else, over 3:1 TD:INT ratio and led the league in touchdowns

I feel like after you get past Mahomes, Burrow, Allen, Lamar, Hurts, maybe Daniels tier, there’s like 17 guys who are in the same tier of moments of great/good/bad/fine and it’s a giant cluster until you get to whatever the Giants, Saints, Browns are doing

No one said that’s his ceiling either. That’s just how I’d expect him to play in an offense with competent playcalling and a good WR1 like he has now. Returning him to that level is the first goal, but by no means should we stop there, I’m hoping a few years with Coen can raise the bar and get him back on track where he should’ve been continuing to develop and progress into something even better after 2022

“it’s year 5” sure, but he’s still only 25 - that’s the benefit of drafting him young. He’s still very moldable and still getting smarter as a human being and not necessarily stuck in his ways
