thats what ive been saying. They should dominate but honestly Luck is far and away their best decision drafting the past few years and one of few very good ones (obviously TY Hilton, Donte Moncrief, and Jonathan Newsome panned out but who else?). Ryan Kelly at C this year was one of them but he's not going to be amazing in year one. They've dragged ass improving that O line and drafted tons of mediocre players instead in the process.

I've been studying all day and just watching the scores, but the amount of comebacks has been stupendous.

The Raiders and Chiefs were both down by pretty big margins, right?

    The rivalry is back on

Typical Pagano clock management on that timeout on the Colts' scoring drive. I was squirming in my seat when it happened and sure enough it may have cost them

I definitely never doubted the Lions would win and definitely never panicked and definitely was completely 100% comfortable throughout the whole fourth quarter and am definitely not lying right now.

I liked Anderson on paper. He hasn't been above average since he entered the lineup. Mewhort was solid, yeah, but that's just one OL piece they drafted that stuck, you got the most obvious "franchise quarterback" that has appeared in a draft in the last 20 years and four offseasons later you can only say maybe two line spots are locked up (is Anthony Castonzo even that good? I'd grade him in the bottom third of the league based on how much pressure Luck deals with)

Yeah, Chiefs were actually down 24-3 late in the 3rd. Not just them though, nearly every game was close, except the Browns of course, and most of them came down to the wire with a ton of game winning drives. Can't remember a more exciting week 1.

maybe he wasn't before and just took this offseason really seriously and adapted to coaching well. That's the secret factor in how a lot of these rookies end up panning out -- or not.

Funny part is this was true of much of Peyton's career. O-line was better, but, D was shit most years except for the 1 or 2 around his SB win.

That said, their entire 2016 draft was o-line, so, decent odds they'll get better there.

You're entirely right, development is everything. It's what I think about with the Aaron Rodgers argument - would he have been the same QB anywhere else?

    The rivalry is back on

The one positive takeaway from this game is that if the Colts can put themselves in position to win without half of their starting D, they should hopefully look much better once Davis is back.

Allen Hurns literally worked his way up the roster from the bottom to the WR2 spot in one offseason, and his role has still not been challenged, even with Julius Thomas, a healthy Marqise Lee, and Rashad Greene added to the offense since. Some players are just, not only very dedicated but very self aware of how to change their bad habits and attack their weaknesses. And that gets them production over more "talented" prospects.

I don't think this is accurate. It was shit early in his career, but from 2002 onwards it was always average to very good. The D was always underrated because it was built to play from ahead and stop the pass, which left them vulnerable to the run. But even DVOA shows them being a pretty solid overall defense from '02-'10 as they ranked:

    '02 - 16th
    '03 - 13th
    '04 - 19th
    '05 - 5th
    '06 - 25th
    '07 - 2nd
    '08 - 11th
    '09 - 16th
    '10 - 24th.

That's two great defenses, 1 good defense, 2 subpar defenses, and the rest around average.

Fair, but what did the Pats/Tom Brady have in that time frame? Colts have always been oddly offense focused, while the pats used their star QB to scrape by with limited offensive weapons

For real. I can't believe he may honestly go his whole career without winning regular season MVP

Yeah they definitely built their teams different, I think the Pats were smarter in that respect, but tbh the Pats D's weren't significantly better than the Colts during this span. (I include 2001 just because the Pats won the SB that year).

    '01 - 13th
    '02 - 14th
    '03 - 2nd
    '04 - 7th
    '05 - 27th
    '06 - 7th
    '07 - 11th
    '08 - 17th
    '09 - 14th
    '10 - 21st

Average rank 13.3, Colts average is 14.5.

  24. You have to take into account how good the offense was and how opposing teams became one dimensional in games that Peyton blew them out.

  25. tkamB

    God of Wine Prestigious

DVOA is a stat that does take that into account.
