i feel like most of the time no unless the pass has already hit the ground. If the pass is still in the air / TBD and the ref throws a flag for roughing then the penalty gets you to a first down / team retains possession

 

It was absolutely an unnecessary hit. That's a flag every time I feel like.

I think Weddle is 5 foot something and Evans is 6’5” so I understand a slight misjudgment when Evans might literally jump over a low tackler for the ball. But fair enough.

 

Roughing the passer happens while the play is active. In this case, a late hit means the play is over meaning the turnover on downs happened.

Its basically late hit, taunting, fighting after the play...that kind of stuff where the ball still turns over.
