I don’t even pretend to know what a catch is. I think in my pea brain that’s a catch but it’s close. He shouldn’t have dropped it though.

 

You have to corral the ball and not lose it even if you land out of bounds.

 

You have to secure the catch if you get two feet in or two steps

3 steps and it’s a guaranteed catch

That’s a good point. The play was technically over when the ball came out. At least I thought that’s what out of bounds meant.
