This article has been imported from chorus.fm for discussion. All of the forum rules still apply.

New York has passed a law to make the punishment for ticket scalping bots harsher. Pitchfork reports:

The use of “ticket bots,” automated software that allows scalpers to buy up huge blocks of tickets for concerts, theater performances, and other events ahead of average customers, will soon be a crime in New York. Earlier this week, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a new law making the use of a ticket bots a class A misdemeanor that could result in substantial fines or even imprisonment.

It's about time! now we need more states to do this..

Because I love seeing brand new announce a tour, 3 seconds later it's sold out and tickets are already on stub hub for triple the price

That's all fine and dandy but if I'm buying 2 tickets at $18 a ticket on Ticketmaster, my service fees shouldn't come close to $18 combined. There's no need to buy 2 tickets for the price of 3.

Nice move. Too bad this assclown also does dumb stuff like makes it a requirement to have tint checked for car inspections to pass.

I know that inspection requirement is not a thing in NJ but I do know that police can stop you just to check your tinted windows. It used to be a secondary offense (a non pull over offense) but they recently changed that.

Yeah it's the same here. NYS goes overboard about it.

How could they even track said bots? Anyone doing this shitty act surely has VPN?

It's a rookie move with the cops. The veterans still enforce the secondary rule unless they're suspicious about something.

It'll probably time how long it takes a user to do a CAPTCHA test, then assume whether it's a bot or human.

I haven't used ticketmaster in awhile they really popped you a additional $20 in service fees per ticket? I knew it was always a scam but I was expecting maybe a $10 service fee, not 20

It's bullshit unfortunately. I've stopped going to a lot of concerts because of those fees. If anything, I'll check Stubhub the night before and if they're cheaper than face value, I'll attend.

I don't really attend many "big" concerts that are on sites like Ticketmaster, luckily, but I definitely makes you hesitate if it's even worth it, which it obviously was lol

Exactly. I'll suck it up for big arena shows that I really want to go to but if it's a small club show, I'll pray tickets are sold day of.
