The next single from Jimmy Eat World will be called “Place Your Debts” and is due out at the end of July. The band recently talked with Forbes about the freedom to release music at their own pace:

It’s just that sometimes we’re really excited about a catchy three-minute rock song, sometimes really excited about something that’s like seven minutes and very, very moody and absolutely no hope of Top 40 radio play. But that’s okay. That’s totally cool. Our core audience is pretty hard core. There’s definitely a group of people out there that’ll give us a shot, whether or not a song is on the radio. That’s all you can really hope for I think at the end of the day. Yeah, I don’t feel like we’re competing with anybody, you’re sort of competing with everybody, in a way you’re competing with everybody and no one at the same time. Which is kind of why like, “Okay, so yeah, we have 10 albums already. That’s a lot of material. We’re really gonna add another 12 songs to that? Okay, what are we not gonna play out live now?” It’s a lot to ask people like, “Dude, you got an hour? Check out my band.” It’s really what you’re asking people when you put out an album. I think in a weird way, more people will give a song a shot than maybe track nine on your album that you killed yourself to make. So if the goal is to get things in front of people that they might want to listen to or have a chance of being listened to, asking them for less of their time in one setting, you might actually get them to check it out.

And Zach added a little more detail in our forums:

For NOW we are doing this. Truth is after our touring cycle for Surviving vanished into thin air, the band body clock needs some time to adjust. In the end the thing that prob guides what we do is the music more than anything else. If the pieces feel like they are fitting together in a cohesive vision then that usually points to a larger collection of tunes. Sometimes, especially after releasing 5 albums in a row without an EP or a major stand alone single release, it’s nice to try something different.

  2. Man... I can't blame them for any of this, but I'm so bummed to see the three-year album cycle come to an end.

As proof that their thinking is correct, "Something Loud" is one of my most-played releases of the year (according to my last-fm profile, even though it's a single song up against full albums). I've been obsessed with it, far more than any other single track released this year. Yet every time I listened to it, I was so pumped to (presumptuously) see the album it would later appear on.

    Did you say yutes?

this band is so beloved by many and it's easy to see why. happy to still have them around and if it means a change of pace in writing/releasing new music to keep them going, I'm all for it. sometimes extended breaks between big releases makes the heart grow fonder and love to see a band take the initiative to do things their own way.

That was my exact thought as well.

Still, I'll always be excited by whatever these guys decide to put out. Even the songs I don't immediately enjoy are great by most standards.

Maybe I'm just anal-retentive, but I'll always prefer full albums to just a bunch of singles. I hate just having singles floating around and much prefer them to be in some sort of collection.

I mean, I get where they're coming from. However, this band will always a be a full album band to me. It's the best way to experience them. The deep cuts, the aesthetics, the different era's...Those are defining characteristics of this band and a reason why I love them so much. Each album paints a world. A world I feel like I'm part of anytime I throw one of their albums on. It always feels safe.

The 3 year album cycle worked perfectly for these guys too. It was the perfect amount of time to get excited for a new material, process the new album, and build lasting and timeless memories attached to the specific era. I hope they eventually get back on that track after trying something new.

I just wish there was a way to hear b-sides easily. For instance, "Jen" is my favorite track from Futures, but that's not on Spotify. That needs to be fixed.

I think this is a way for them to stay relevant and continue to put out music. I will always prefer a full album over scattered singles though.

Like they said, their core audience is very hardcore, but I'm assuming they probably don't get as many casual listeners.

I think this is something pop punk bands do really well now days. Especially Hot Mulligan, Knuckle Puck and Real Friends.

They usually have a two year album cycle and then release an ep in the off year. This keeps people talking about them.

Anyway, those are my scattered thoughts on the matter. Bummed there isn't a new album.

I understand everyone wants a JEW record every 3 years like clockwork, but like they said, they were gearing up to celebrate and promote that last record and the world shut down.

Makes it feel to them like the album just went away after putting all that work into it, and it would especially feel like that if they just up and put out another record. I don't blame them for wanting to mix it up.

Certainly gives them an opportunity to put extra consideration into quality over quantity, as well.
