Yeah definitely was a weird time for it. Another career killer serious album that comes to mind from that time is Welcome the Night by the Ataris (released 5 months after Welcome Home). A lot of the early-2000s bands were trying new things at the time with emo blowing up and I assume Blink 182 - Untitled had to have a bit to do with it as well.
Coming Home is my favourite they put out as a whole album era, and although it’s little different, I don’t think it was a drastic shift. The lyrics were really inspired by what’s really going on and maybe a little bit more of that now would help.
Welcome the Night is one of my all time favorite records and it definitely destroyed their career and Kris Roe. I feel this hard. 2006 was either neon power pop or like goth inspired emo. Definitely thankful for both Coming Home and WtN.
The label was going through some big changes as well when Coming Home came out. Messed a lot of the album rollout up.
I guess I have a weird recollection of Coming Home rollout then. I saw them live with I Am The Avalanche at a small private college in the town where I went to HS, and they played at least Oxygen and Hold My Hand and it seemed like the lead up to the album was going well. Coming Home was also the first full album I heard of NFG's that made me fall in love with the band and go back to their previous albums.
Lights and Sounds, also good. It just doesn’t land as high in their strong discography as Coming Home for NFG in their discography.
When I think of 2006 pop punk I think of some awful shit like cute is what we aim for and boys like girls
Well all this talk made me listen to Coming Home today. What a great friggin record. I then stumbled upon this, man I miss Fuse and Steven's Untitled Rock Show:
2006 was also In With the Out Crowd for Less Than Jake - another one hated and panned at the time, that in retrospect is actually a pretty great album. Also graduated HS that year, so maybe that’s why I Look back on all of these albums fondly now.
Just dug into Coming Home after this discussion... I totally forgot about this song. I used to love this one.
