Cyrus is a great musician. Really great. I feel like his style is kinda the thing that set them apart from the crowd. On Mike Herrera’s podcast he mentioned being a huge 311 fan; it’s dat phunky bounce that makes their songs pop.
I don’t know shit about drumming but I love Cyrus’ drumming. I don’t know why. But he definitely sets them apart from other drummers in the genre, at least back when I used to listen to more music.
Jordan and Ian prolly dislike recording since they have little/nothing to do with the writing process. Gotta be a bummer/intimidating to have Chad over your shoulder going "NOT like that! Not what I'm hearing in my head!" haha. A necessary evil for him, but I'm sure playing shows and touring is WAY more fun for those two.
Seems like it's not uncommon for 1 or 2 people in a band to do a majority of the writing, unless someone else happens to have a very specific idea. I think about the Maddens in Good Charlotte (Billy wrote a little on Chronicles) and Deryck in Sum 41 (Cone has written a few songs that ended up being b-sides). I personally know nothing about being in a band though lol.
Yeah it’s pretty common, if not the usual, for one or two members to write most of a bands’ material. Especially in genres like pop punk where everybody is generally playing the same notes. It’s also pretty common that one member is playing most of the parts on recordings. I always assumed Chad played the bass parts on NFG records, kinda surprised he doesn’t.
I know it's common for one or two members to do most of the writing lol, it's just pretty rare that the singer does none of it, especially the vocal melodies
Just got around to listening to that recent episode of the Mike Herrera podcast with Cyrus. I like hearing what he has to say about different things. Just seems like a really down to earth guy.
I went to an SJC Drums/Vans event where he was the featured performer to promote FTSTYS3. He did a Q&A and I got to meet him - can confirm he is rad as hell.
I know I’ve said it before but when they did the meet and greet for the 20 years tour, you could see how genuine of a dude he is. Everyone was nice and made conversation but he asked me where I was from and a bunch of other questions then shook my hand and said how much it meant to him that I’ve been a fan all this time. Really left an impression.
Can someone send me a high-quality rip of Puzzles? Mildly annoying that it can't be purchased anywhere...
