I’m genuinely confused what the problem is with the lyrics on this one. They’ve had some very cringey lyrics in the past, and no doubt some problematic ones too, but this one... I don’t get it. This doesn’t seem like it’s about Hayley, and it doesn’t sound to me at all like he says “whore” in the lyric in question.

They aren't singing "whore". Whoever submitted the lyrics originally on genius.com typed it as that, which is why people were thinking that's what was sung. And they said in the Billboard article what the song is about and it's not Hayley.

    So assuming that this weekend...

If possible, could you point me toward any of those interviews? I’m trying to find some that might give more information toward what you’re saying, but I haven’t been able to find anything yet. I’ve only found stuff talking about her dealing with stuff after the divorce, which makes absolute sense. A divorce isn’t easy for anyone.

I’m genuinely interested and would like to learn more. NFG has been probably the most consistently influential band in my life for almost two decades, so if there’s something I should know I’d want to read it.

Those lyrics have been up on genius since the record leaked. Chad has a history of using shitty gendered insults in songs and writing terrible shit about the women in his life. It is truly not out of the realm of possibility that he would hypocritically call someone a whore, and pretending it is is very silly. I’m glad the band has clarified, mostly because it seems insane to release a song with a lyric like that in 2020. Doesn’t change the fact that Chad fucking sucks and has only himself to blame for the fact that people would 100% believe he would write that.

When did Chad write about his women in principle? :chin:

Hm... Typical lyrics about breaking up, I don’t think the band deserves a bias for any new aggressive song because of this. It's dumb lol

If you think it is normal to write a song about following your ex girlfriend around town and killing her new boyfriend, please never interact with a woman again.

you're not a child, you know goddamn well that not all lyrics are meant to be taken literally. Don't try and use that as an excuse for why Chad wrote disgusting lyrics about stalking his ex and killing her bf

I know this may be shocking to hear, but you always have the option of choosing *not* to ask a bullshit devil’s advocate hypothetical question in order to quasi-defend a famous musician who has a history of saying and doing gross things to women.

I actually believe that there is a good and important conversation to have about free artistic expression. As well as the differences between those writing a fucked up horror movie and/or novel, and those who write songs about fucked up things. It seems that lyrics get criticized unfairly, when lyrics can also be fictional, metaphoric, etc. Which is why I asked the question “ Are lyrics always supposed to be taken literally?”, cause y’all agree with me that they’re not, but you’re also pissed cause it defeats your argument and y’all don’t like Chad in this instance (but this applies to any musician/lyricist you don’t like) and use lyrics/song against him/them on a personal level, as if the lyrics are something he really went out and did. I just think that if you have a problem with a person regarding personal/real life issues, you should judge them on that and not their art, especially when misconstruing their songs

there's a difference about writing songs where you are flying on the back of a unicorn eating skittles or writing songs about murdering babies.

again, you are smart enough to know which is good and which is bad.

Absolutely, but you’re still purposely ignoring my point, and that’s fine. I’m not stressing over lyrics

oh my lord, come on, give it up. Everyone understands your point, we know lyrics aren't always taken literally, absolutely no one cares if these are literal or not, singing about stalking your ex and killing her bf is a bad thing if it's real AND if it's not real

Yes, we can’t talk about more than one thing going on, you’re completely right

the hoops people will jump through to avoid talking about problematic aspects of their fav musicians is incredible
