It wasn't my opinion when the album came out, but after some time, I think Barbed Wire might be my favorite song off of Makes Me Sick. I still really like Happy Being Miserable too.
Just heard The Greatest of all Time and thought it was REALLY enjoyable. Think I might have to check out this leak.
I just took one breeze through of the leak...the only lyrics that made me truly cringe were about napkins in a glove compartment. Outside of that one head scratching moment, I thought this was a classic NFG-sounding record! Love the energy and don’t really mind 15 songs in 2020 from them.
Lyrical maturity has been my biggest issue with NFG and blink for a while now, especially when they’re capable of doing so much more.
Having been socialised with 90s east coast hip hop, I never even remotely cared about the alleged quality of pop punk lyrics, it's just not something I ever looked for from the genre because for me personally it couldn't measure up anyway
For me it’s more not wanting cringe lyrics as opposed to wanting “intelligent” lyrics. I’d almost rather them be super generic than adding in that extra line or rhyme that causes me to roll my eyes.
I hear ya, i’m guilty of this too haha. Half the time i’m just blindly singing along not even registering what’s being said.
I mean I don't want my bands to be overtly political, but we are living in some fucked up times. You think over the course of 15 songs you'd conjure something of meaning or substantive to say. You can still rock out while actually saying something. This is like feigned teenage angst still and it just doesn't feel authentic. I appreciate the band for sticking it out and keep on keepin' on, but you've got to adjust a bit.
I’m actually not sure I want to hear NFG’s political hot takes, I really have better sources for that. But I hear you.
Seeing as Chad Gilbert is a Trump supporter, you would surely be disappointed, as would the rest of this site if NFG were to go that route. Might be why they avoid that topic altogether.
I enjoy the entire record. I think this is a throwback album for them and it's definitely fun to listen to. It'll be a great summer album.
Honestly, lyrics aren't what I look to Blink or NFG for. If I want pop punkish music with good lyrics I'd go for The Wonder Years, The Menzingers, etc. With these bands I think of them how I felt about Man Overboard, I just want catchy fun music without any totally cringey moments.
No idea why, but my brain just went immediately to the Chuck E Cheese band cover of Love In This Club.
It definitely was weird spending the entire weekend listening to the new Spanish Love Songs album and taking those lyrics in and then listening to this album on Sunday. I agree with the sentiment that I never listened to NFG for their lyrics but still expect them to not be overly cheesy like these are. As a teenager I always liked their lyrics and even looking back on them now (maybe it's nostalgia) I think some of the lines are clever, but it seems like over time they have gotten much worse. I know it was always portrayed in the media that Steve wrote the majority of the lyrics so maybe that had something to do with it. Like, the lyrical quality of NGCS and the self-titled are far superior to their past few releases.
"“It sounds like Donald Trump inspired these songs, but there is a lot more than him that makes us sick,” Gilbert cracked." quote from Heckled in church? For New Found Glory, that was a first Only thing I can find about Chad and Trump on Google. Where is there proof of him being a Trump supporter?
