They could probably still ask Steve to write lyrics, right? Seems like he’s been through a lot and would have a lot to say.
Lyrics were a sore point for me too. "You don't like horror movies, This is way more frightening than them" "Call me extreme, we would've been prom king and queen If we were both still seventeen Was throwing in the towel" "I drew stick figures of you and I on a hillside I drew stick figures of you and me, don't you agree? We would make the best team Better than the '96 Bulls ever were Jordan, Rodman, and Pippen Wouldn't have known what had hit them" Anyway, yeah... it really sucked me out from being able to listen to the music. I know it's supposed to be "tongue-in-cheek" but it's just too cheesy I know NFG isn't known for amazing lyrics, but they have some good one liners over their discography.
Certainly has but that is a bridge that is long since burned, sadly. Agree about lyrics - been gradually getting worse and worse
I don’t agree with that. It is really important to have good and memorable album cycle though. Deluxing this record, especially after a leak and lockdown, is an attempt to salvage this area and I hope these bonus songs are good and can kind of do that. I’ll stick by my lyrics as the downfall for this record comment because musically it’s still very NFG.
Always interesting to see how the NFG fan camp shakes out. I'm definitely of the mind that Makes Me Sick was their best record since Coming Home. I prefer when they lean into a more mature sound, so the last record was a HUGE disappointment.
I don’t think makes me sick was as “mature” sounding as Coming Home, but I’d agree with the sentiment.
Damn - was hoping for a Coming Home vibes as mentioned and I don’t really hear it. Anyways, Coming Home is their best and most accomplished (musically speaking) record to date. Not Without A Fight is pretty good too - everything past that mostly sucks and I can’t get into it.
Each album after Not Without a Fight....I can find maybe half an album of good individual songs but I haven't found a full "album" that I really liked.
I actually like all of their albums, personally. My least favorite is probably Resurrection, but I still like about half of the songs on that record. They just really handicapped a lot of those songs by refusing to have lead and rhythm guitar parts, I'd guess in some weird attempt to prove they could go on without Steve. I think Not Without A Fight is great, Radiosurgery is a ton of fun and I don't get the hate for it, and I think the hooks on Forever x Infinity or whatever are good enough that I can mostly ignore the bad lyrics and just enjoy the songs for what they are. Maybe my standards are too low, idk. So yeah I'm pretty excited for this. Especially curious about the "rework" of Puzzles, which I think is their best song they've written in a long time. The "demo" version hardly sounds like one to me already, so I'm interested in seeing how different it actually is.
it's the first time in my entire fandom where i'm just not feeling anything at all. Make me Sick was one of their top to bottom best albums in a decade (and i like most of their albums!). They sprinkled in a fun convers album. This album cycle just wasn't neccesary. It's the first time i think "guys, you dont need to release stuff EVERY SINGLE YEAR/2 years". Take a breath!
Lots of great bands can produce great records in two years (or less for that matter). The album lacked solid lyrics for where they are as band, where their audience is, and their track record. Maybe being silly and fun in their screen to stereo vids made them think that’s what people wanted in their originals. Yes, they could have reevaluated for this particular album cycle and hopefully this EP kind of gets back their. Not having a long term well established lyricist hurts the band.
