My hot take on the post two posts above is that Shakespeare in Love is a better movie than Saving Private Ryan. Also, The Departed is still a riot to watch and won in a weak year anyway.

Let's get these people moving faster!

Definitely think it's a stupid idea, because "popular" and "best" don't have to be mutually exclusive (and sometimes haven't been - Get Out for one example). But it's going to be extra confusing when they try and differentiate between them. Like others have said, just be more openminded about what movies get nominated for Best Picture.

But besides all of that, this isn't going to increase ratings. 1) Traditional tv ratings are tanking, they need to accept that. 2) Just because people go see a movie in theatres, doesn't mean they'll be more likely to watch the Oscars. I find that underlying assumption pretty baffling.

I think this is a bad move. To me, the simple way to diversify Oscar noms and "get it right" more often would be to diversify the voting pool, which they started to do. And it was super apparent in last years noms- Get Out and Lady Bird are a testament to that, in my opinion. Also the fact that there aren't categories for things like stunts and voice acting is just mind-boggling. Why don't you start with honoring the hard work people put in before making a monopolized popular category?

I enjoy Shakespear In Love a lot. It’s a great movie. But from a pure filmmaking standpoint... Saving Private Ryan was better. The opening scene alone is a monumental achievement in film. But again Shakespear In Love was great

You've got a point with the first scene of Saving Private Ryan. I'm just not really a big war movie guy. I think Shakespeare in Love is more subversive and more enjoyable to rewatch. Also, Private Ryan is a more impressive piece of filmmaking, but Shakepeare in Love has the better screenplay.
