  6. about to start 13 reasons why. it intrigues me so much, not the subject itself, i'm used to it, but how negative the reception is by therapists and lots of people with mental issues. i've got a bad feeling about it, but i'll try to remain neutral when i watch it.

I'm pretty intrigued by it too. Probably won't watch it (at least for a while, if I eventually do) but I'm really curious based on the super mixed reviews.

  8. yep it's rare to see reviews that mixed for a tv show. some friends told me that it was eye opening for them, others described it as unrealistic and caricatural. we'll see...

I think it's a bit of both tbh

  10. Sounds like it's eye-opening for people who don't have experience with mental illness and problematic for people who do.

These are accurate. I went in and watched it blind, and enjoyed it enough and it resonated with me on the level the narrative intended, but after reading the dark side of how it could be interpreted among at risk teens my perception shifted. I don't regret watching it but I would be careful with who I recommended it to.

I think that's the case with anything that tackles a difficult subject though. It's always possible that people will interpret things a certain way and be influenced negatively but I don't agree that those things shouldnt be made because of that. Honestly I've disagreed with a lot of the issues people have had with the content of the show itself and from what I've seen I feel like the shows done a lot more good than harm, including getting people to discuss these issues in the first place, even if they're bashing the show while doing so.

I definitely don't think that anything "shouldn't be made", I just think the message may have wildly different effects across it's massively impressionable target audience.

  14. The idea of "at least it's opened up a conversation" made me think of 50 Shades re: BDSM relationships, which made me think of Secretary, which was far better in handling the subject matter (and just a lot better in general) but also far less popular. I'm wondering if there's been a show dealing with mental illness in a better way that just hasn't had the same amount of attention, perhaps because it's a little more real and a little less accessible.

I mean I have history with mental illness and I found it helpful for me so idk *shrug* it seems just like a mixed bag cause I've def seen others who struggle saying they liked it as well. Unless were just talking professionals

  17. I've only actually played one of the games, but I'm all about this.

  18. Just as a personal anecdote, people I've talked to who have had mental health issues reacted positively to 13 Reasons, and I got a lot from it. From what I've read online, some people got revenge/vindication aspects from it, which felt problematic. I understand where they're coming from, but I didn't get that at all.

Yeah I totally see why people don't like it. I came away with a different interpretation of things but I don't begrudge anyone who didn't like it or found it harmful. Espesh if it's true that they ignored the advice of professionals.

Most of the people I've seen speaking out about how problematic it is, either haven't seen the whole show or are refusing to watch it. I'm sure there's also people out there who have watched it all and still feel that way about it but I haven't seen many. I just feel like the show does a very good job, particularly in the second half, of making it not about revenge or malice and shows how much suicide hurts and affects the ones you love despite thinking they'd be better off without you. The suicide scene itself is also one of the most harrowing and affecting scenes I've ever watched and it shows how ugly and painful an act like that is. I certainly didn't feel like any part of the show glamorized suicide.

Season 2 of You're the Worst is so perfect. Some of my favourite moments of television ever.

  24. Oh, I didn't hear about them ignoring professionals. That'd be unfortunate. I watched the 'Beyond The Reasons' featurette that plays after finishing the show, and they had a handful of professionals talking about the show and the issues it deals with.

Agreed. I found it it very effective and certain scenes hard to watch, as they were intended. It's a show that tackles serious issues via an elaborate premise, which I think it pulls off, but I can see why someone might have a more negative interpretation.
