we gotta find a way to stop using RT as an indicator of anything

 

case in point, now sitting at 64% with 42 reviews.

 

it would be fine if people stopped using it as letter grade and used it for what it is

 

i know Metacritic is supposed to remedy this to some extent, but sometimes their rating feels pulled out of thin air. how can you determine that a slightly-positive review with no numerical or letter grade whatsoever equates to an 83? it's all kind of stupid.

 

It would also help if they stopped reporting it after like 8 reviews. No score until it hits 50 or something.

 

That’s definitely how studios game the system. Get all the Grace Randolph-like influencer reviews out first, advertise that and then the real critic reviews come out.

That said, really feels like Apple TV+ got their Best Picture award, released “Killers of the Flower Moon” and said “No more good movies!”

 

which is weird because most of their shows are good to great

I’m not trying to talk shit on Apple TV+. I appreciate their commitment to original stuff and not IP slop. But their hit rate for movies is not great. And they are allergic to advertising any of it beyond their platform. F1 is obviously an exception.

 

Killers Of The Flower Moon and Napoleon had pretty strong advertising campaigns. Napoleon's ad campaign was so strong that it severely overhyped everyone's expectations about that movie.

 

i've frequently wondered why Apple's film slate just doesn't have the pull that their TV shows have (marketing and viewership issues aside). i think i can name only a small handful of films that have been well-received and/or had some semblance of commercial success, and of the ones that didn't have this praise, they either seem to be emulating films from other streamers or potentially coming from creatives whose track-records have been hit or miss in recent memory. i know Apple's unofficial MO has generally had a "talent first" focus, but it doesn't really translate to a ton of "must see" films unless they've had some shot at awards success.

 

Greyhound was one of the better WW2 films of the past 10 years but I feel like it got kinda buried in Apple's library and released to little fanfare.

 

Does any streaming service have a great hit rate for original movies? Feel like they all have a couple of winners at best

 

To be fair, their marketing for TV is shit too. Otherwise, idk why people aren’t watching their shows. They have such a great lineup.
