Audiences have gotten worse since Covid absolutely, and the quality of theaters has degraded significantly since COVID/because capitalism/America in general. All that is part of why people go to movies less, and a future within the foreseeable future where movie theaters are scarce enough to functionally not exist for most Americans actually is on the table. That’s why people are impassioned about defending theaters against the idea that they shouldn’t exist, or that there’s no reason to care whether or not movie theaters exist. Cinema is the medium in so many ways, it’s a part of the formula of what separates it from “content”, the idea that you can go to a big screen in an environment curated to offer a selection of films to experience in a dark room surrounded by an audience. Metro Detroit lost one of its last independent theaters, and now it’s harder to see films from other countries, or independent films, films that go against dominant ideals or showcase underrepresented stories. Sure the internet is available and you can access infinite films from around the world in an instant, but the sheer expanse of it allows movie theaters give incentive to go see certain films when they come out, or when they’re screened, and allow for cultural moments centered around something like Parasite, one of the most packed and responsive audiences I’ve ever been in, or Black Panther, which is also among those ranks. Going to the movies is just fun, you’ll get to stream or rent everything that comes out eventually anyway. Good movie theaters are a good thing.
