Halfway through this and it is truly a bizarre film. Joaquin is pretty bad.

    Things have changed.

If you imagine his performance as Michael Scott playing Napoleon, it's pretty amazing.

The gap between bad Ridley Scott and good Ridley Scott is maybe the biggest of any current director. I couldn't tell if he was trying to do a farce or a serious movie.

Maybe David Gordon Green. Although I guess the difference is with Scott you don’t know which version you’re gonna get whereas Green is now committed to just being bad

Before I saw Napoleon, I came across an article that summed up a New Yorker piece about Ridley Scott for Napoleon’s promotion where he made a rare comment on his deceased brother Tony. The summary here totally changed my perception about elderly directors. If given the opportunities, they will keep directing until they drop dead. They don’t want to retire. Filmmaking is what keeps them going. See: Scorsese, Eastwood, Woody Allen, Kubrick, Altman.

I am glad he is still directing but it is fascinating that he can make something as good as The Last Duel and then something as exhausting as House of Gucci in the same year. I assume a lot of it is because he doesn't usually write his own films and doesn't really stay with the same writer either.

Kubrick is tough to gauge because the gaps between his films were just getting longer and longer (12 years between Full Metal Jacket and Eyes Wide Shut). Allen's hit rate had gotten a lot lower before he was exiles, while Scorsese's last decade is arguably his greatest run of films ever. Eastwood is really just making films for himself at that point.

lumet was mixing some pretty poor films in there towards the end before leaving us with one of his best

Directors declining near the end used to be more common, which is a big part of why Tarantino is insisting on retiring, but Scorsese and Spielberg are really changing the narrative.

I really hope George Lucas makes another movie before it is too late. The huge success of Star Wars sort of robbed us of a director who was so promising before he became a businessman over a filmmaker.

Lucas was up there with Spielberg, Coppola, and Scorsese when he started but then he had to run a media empire. Imagine if Spielberg spent decades overseeing a Jaws extended universe or Scorsese was getting ready to do a sequel trilogy about Travis Bickle.
