Recently I was able to connect with the band called NAMAZU to discuss their latest music. Their new single, called “ICE 800” is a slick mix of big rock hooks paired with tight musicianship. In this interview, I asked the band about where they got their name from, the bands they’ve shared billings with, and what is coming next for NAMAZU. If you’re enjoying the new music video, please consider supporting the band here.

Where did the band come up with the name of NAMAZU?

NAMAZU is actually a giant catfish that lives under Japan and causes earthquakes. We thought it fit us since we live right on the Mississippi River here in Memphis.

Your new video sounds and looks great. Who directed the mostly performance-based video?

George Hancock. He’s shot a ton of videos and live performances around the country. He was a part of the Slow Southern Steel documentary that CT from Rwake put out.

What bands have you toured with so far, and what bands do you hope to share a billing with one day?

We’ve mostly gone out on our own tours but we’ve played with a ton of bands who come thru Memphis: Pike VS the Automaton, Whores, Elder, Big Business, Conan, Nebula, Weedeater, Sasquatch, Howling Giant, Truckfighters, Black Tusk, Wrong, Kylesa, Monolord. We’re playing the first night of the Memphis Hates You Fest next month. We’re stoked!

What inspired each of you in the band to make music together in NAMAZU?

I think we can all agree that punk rock saved our lives. We each come from the same place musically.

What can fans of this music expect from your band for the rest of 2025?

We’ve got a new EP we’re working on. Should be ready for release by the end of the year. Thanks for checking out our jams!
