I knew this would be the toughest album.

Hexagram (Both are among my favorite heavy Deftones songs but Hexagram is such a perfect opener. And it knocked me on my ass the first time I heard it.)
Minerva (Again, both great songs. Minerva was the first single that came out after I became a fan so it’s pretty special.)

Hexagram and WGTB are two of my absolute fav Deftones songs so that was kinda brutal, but Hexagram is my absolute favorite Deftones song so I obv had to go with it.

Minerva, to me, is like the perfect Deftones song to show someone if they’ve never heard of them and you can only show them one. It blends a bunch of aspects of their sound perfectly and is relatively accessible.

On the whole, part of the reason I love this album so much is it feels to me like the Deftones album; it’s appropriately self-titled. I don’t know how to properly articulate it, but it just feels like the album where they fully found their own unique sound, getting it down to its very essence. I love almost all of their records, but this is the one where I hear them forging a sound that is 100% uniquely them. I understand why people point to White Pony as the band’s best record, but to me that album feels more like an outlier in their discography than the definitive showcase of *their* sound. Idk.

I am awful at articulating this stuff so I’m sorry for that rambling mess.
