I like the remaster too! It's a bit jarring in some sections of the songs after hearing the original mix for so many years, but this gives the record a whole new shelf life. I plan to do a full article diving into all the key similarities and differences next week.
Yeah I thought most of this sounds great. Some of it is kind of weird, Give Em Hell Kid in particular was one that didn’t land for me but overall I appreciate this release
The new Give em Hell Kid is the one I can’t get behind. The bass at the beginning is a completely different take, the “Apple Music” version shouting in in the intro, and the levels across the board just sound jarring. Everything else on the remaster sounds fuller and richer to me, but Give em Hell just feels off.
I had I’m Not Okay stuck in my head out of nowhere yesterday and now this thread is bumped for me. It’s a sign.
Has anyone else noticed that this mix is kind of quiet? If I put another album on right after, the volume goes up like crazy. I have to turn my speakers up to max listening to the new mix in Apple Music on my Mac
i thought Atmos only applied to albums with Atmos mixes in the Apple Music desktop app, and the new version of Three Cheers is just in stereo. unless setting Atmos to Always On just adds an unintended equalizer to stereo tracks?
Ah yep I had atmos on Automatic. Turning it off gave a significant volume boost. That and playing with the sound check toggle. Also didn't realize that lossless is disabled by default! Glad I checked settings!
I’m not sure how it works, but I turned it off because I was noticing specifically the volume cut on albums by … a lot.
If you have a good setup but not actually Dolby then I definitely recommend turning it off at all times
Kinda scared to check the rerelease out based on comments, the original intro and outro of give em hell kid are kinda my favorite parts of any of their songs
Like I mean of all the things to mess with... lol After giving it a full listen, I'm sure like if I was giving both versions a first listen, there might be things I like better on the new version. It is cool to hear some new parts that stand out now. I think I might like the bridge to Ghost more on this one. But at the end of the day, that'll probably be my only listen cause I wouldn't replace the original in my head with this haha.
If this was the mix in 2004 MCR would not have taken off. The “loudness wars” version was perfect for a scene band that was getting major label offers before their debut.
I will say, the mix on the live BBC recordings is absolutely terrible and you can't hear anything over the bass and drums haha
I feel like a rerecording of the debut is the only potentially fun "remake" project left that would be fun if they're intent on not making new music
