I think they all fit the description in the prompt except one somewhat questionable... But vote with your points!
I count 5 that I would not consider side projects, mostly because they formed after the original band broke up.
My theory - the more side a project is must be inversely proportional to the length of time between main band activity
I'm going to get to it today, but I'll definitely be allocating my points to the submissions that check the most boxes here
Oh man, I can't wait to read some of the comments after seeing what's hovering around the bottom of the list haha
I got sniped for my first two band options and landed on something that felt obvious and surprisingly not already picked, but I wonder if either/both of those things are in the bottom for different reasons haha
I guess it's not express in the prompt, but I was thinking of side projects that were also active during the "scene" days. In that respect several of these come too late for me, and at least a few others are of bands that came later than the scene. Plus the ones that aren't side projects but were new bands formed after old ones ended. Also really surprised we didn't get The Sound of Animals Fighting. I thought about it but assumed it was already taken.
I thought of them too but it has been too long since I have listened to any of their music I wouldn't have known which song to pick
Ages ago I was touring with a band that had a history with Squire. At the time, he was recording a This Providence album, who were some of our buddies, so we stopped by his studio while we were in the area on an off day. Cannot remember for the life of me how the conversation got there lol - everyone else in the room was pretty close with Matt so I’m sure it spawned from something one of them asked
Apologies to @alkalinexandy as I am not familiar enough with Jack’s Mannequin to have realized that someone else broke the rule in a much more egregious manner haha
There's some sort of universe balance that I won with Something Corporate while someone completely flubbed the prompt with Jack's Mannequin
Vindicated was a non album single that came out 2 years before it was a hidden track on the other album you sticklers! I am also having a hard time calling blink part of this scene, so I have not been voting for them. Same with Alk3. Larry Arms too, but that was a niche pick.
I wrote in my comment that Vindicated absolutely counts!!!! But yes, being a hidden track technically makes it kinda borderline haha. I agree re: blink and lawrence arms, but I think Alk3 is squarely inside. and that being said, blink are kinda like the daddy's of the scene so i let it slide half the time
HAH! No need to apologize... But seriously. I kinda think I fucked myself with the write-up and the song choice. LOL It was a split LP but their tracks were all shit that was recorded already (3-4 rejected Short Music tracks, a cover from a comp, and alternate takes of already released stuff). I overexplained! I think what is/isn't "scene" is incredibly vague. But I think that's kinda fun? And weird? My loose definition is a band that a normie dork would have wanted to see at Warped Tour in the early 2000s, toured with bands of that ilk, or would have been called 'emo' or 'pop-punk' (correctly or incorrectly) on somebody's MySpace profile. LOL I honestly think there's a strong case to be made for some of the bands on the cusp but that's kinda on the writer to make that case in their write-up.
