I'm so mad I forgot to submit a song for the second round. I'm going to ghost-write in Devil in Jersey City by Coheed. That first album is still very pop punk especially compared to the rest of their discography.
American Football the band is about as far removed from the pop-punk scene of the 00's as it is American Football the sport.
To be fair, no one outside of like a few hundred people actually heard that album until well into the 00s.
I wasn't really saying that specifically about American Football, but I also don't think it's too hard to imagine an alternate timeline where that band didn't break up and they were featured by Alternative Press or ended up on at least one Warped Tour in the 2000s haha What I mostly meant is that I think there's a "does the same person listen to these bands" vs. "do these bands sound similar" vs. "did these bands tour/etc. together" question that will make some people miss the mark on these prompts. Some voters are going to take league the words "Pop Punk" more literally and aren't going to give votes to certain areas of the Venn diagram (even if I think "The Scene" and the league description both give a more expansive range).
i picked the straylight run song this round. was definitely thinking more scene adjacent than exclusively pop-punk. something i'll try to avoid in the future rounds.
I think Straylight is a perfect pick and absolutely fits, I don't think the league is strictly pop-punk at all, but I think all the things listed in the description point to a pretty music scene (Warped Tour, Alternative Press, AbsolutePunk, SmartPunk, Drive Thru, Fueled By Ramen, Hopeless, Fearless, Taste of Chaos, Nintendo Fusion), which clearly includes Straylight but not Kelly Clarkson or American Football. That being said American Football would have been a good inclusion in the NEXT round haha. And as always, with all leagues, picking what to submit is part of the game. You are absolutely free to submit whatever you want, and explain why at length in your submission, there is no king or ruler who decides what belongs, everyone has points that they are able to spend however they like and people will always speak with their votes
For this round, I'm probably not voting for songs that come from artists who already had a debut for another well-known project (like, "The Mixed Tape" is one of my 5 favorite songs on like playlist, but it feels wrong to say that it's a "debut" when there were multiple Something Corporate albums and people already had a relationship with Andrew's music). I wouldn't exclude Straylight Run for genre/being a part of "The Scene" reasons, but it's a trickier question of whether Tell All Your Friends feels like enough of an introduction to John' and Shaun's music to rule it out for me for this prompt (it's also the only song from that band I actually listen to, but I do love it a lot).
I agree on both fronts, I love Andrew with all my heart but I am not sure I am going to award a point because SoCo.... but Circa? Straylight? I agree are tougher calls, hard to say. Gonna do my listening and voting today, not sure where my points are gonna land still!
@trevorshmevor your comment on American Football was exactly a joke that I thought would be funny to do, which is submit that exact same song for this round haha
