Wow...remember when this event was relevant? Just for kicks I decided to look up the nominees from 20 years ago...Jamiriquoi, Beck, Nine Inch Nails, No Doubt, and Jewel were all nominated for video of the year. There were 19 categories with fairly varied nominees across all genres. Somewhere around the turn of the millennium this event just took a nose dive and has been getting progressively worse.

What is the over/under of guitars that will be used during the broadcast...2?

There's plenty of great artists nominated like Kendrick, Lorde, ATCQ, Foo Fighters etc. The VMAs have always been an event for trend-hopping corporatists, it's always just been a reflection of the Billboard 200. Just because it's focused on hip hop this decade and not grunge like in '93 or pop punk like in '06 doesn't make it any better or worse. It's so fucking pretentious to act as if it's gotten worse somehow since the turn of the century.

Fifth Harmony has too many noms. There are lots of better pop songs this year.

So much pop and hip pop. Not enough rock. Sad.

Sure. I mean you're entitled to that opinion, it only really bothers me when people blame hip hop and pop for it.

  9. VMAs are dumb but any and all SZA exposure makes the world a better place

Also they can give "best fight against the system" to any one of those songs I've never heard if they want to, but we all know it belongs to Vince Staples for BagBak

It has gotten worse. The performances now are a joke, and the spots are all purchased by their management. When was the last iconic performance? Britney back in 2001? Best New Artist, presented by Taco Bell lol, what a fucking joke. They should just chance it to a Billboard Awards type show because there is nothing groundbreaking or artistic about 90% of these videos.

    This is still a thing?

My favorite part of the VMA nominees every year is there are always one - or several - nominees that were literally just released within the past month or that are nominated for 'video of the year' or other categories.

Perfect example this year: Dj Khaled's wild thoughts was just released five weeks ago. Foo Fighters' Run was released 6 weeks ago...how are they already eligible?
