This is such a small thing, but in retrospect I’m actually surprised Tyrell was in the fantasy world since I don’t think Real Elliot had met or was even aware of him when subconscious angry Elliot created it. Even more surprising is that Gideon wasn’t there, considering it seemed like he and Real Elliot had quite an affinity for one another
if my understanding is right, Mastermind Elliot was changing the fantasy world as things happened irl to keep tighter control over it. Hence Dom, who he didn't know when he first took control either, Price having the Angela's father role, Tyrell etc. actually wouldn't be surprised if Angela and Elliot getting married only started after Angela died in real life, as a coping mechanism
Ohh, this is a great point. Might also explain a few of the times our Elliot had “lost time” that wasn’t being controlled by Mr. Robot
What a series finale. Sam knocked it out it out of the park. It’s literally insane that after 4 seasons we never get to see what the real Elliot looks like.
I wonder how long Rami has known the twist. I can't decide if I think knowing would help or hinder his performance (though I know nothing about acting to be fair lol)
so now that the show's over and I literally can't think about anything else apparently, what's everyone's top 5 of the series? imo: Don't Delete Me (3x8) - one of the greatest, genuinely perfect episodes I've seen of any show Hello, Elliot (4×13) - recency bias maybe but I think this will go down with The Leftovers finale as a classic in the true sense of the word Proxy Authentication Required (4×7) - just an incredible piece of TV with an all-time performance by Rami, this not being the best of the season is absolutely wild Successor (2x8) - straight-up the most anxiety inducing hour of the show for me, most would go for the episode where Cisco dies but this is an absolute masterpiece of tension (with no Rami!) Gone (4x10) - Dom and Darlene are the greatest characters of all time, one day this episode will be recognised as the masterpiece it is honourables to the hallucination and twist reveal episodes S1, Cisco's death S2, the one-take episode S3 and Tyrell's last stand S4. goddamn this show gave us some killer hours
So what was Whiterose's machine actually? I feel like they implied it was just some sort of doomsday device if Elliot chose wrong in the game.
The implication is that it would send the world into a Matrix of sorts, or possibly an alternate dimension. However, running the machine beneath the power plant came with a high risk of kicking off a nuclear meltdown that would kill everyone in Washington Township. The potential for a nuclear meltdown was why Whiterose had been trying to move the project to the Congo
Got it. My concern was that we don't see any proof, but Angela still falls victim to believing that it could actually happen. I wish we could have gotten a little more from the WR/Angela interactions but I'm happy with how the show ended.
Whiterose took advantage of Angela’s trauma to convince her the machine would work. That’s kind of WR’s MO
Truth. It’s key to remember that she also convinced an army of people that it’s totally okay to kill themselves without a second thought if she asked them to or a mission went slightly off plan. She’s a mastermind in controlling others
There's no way that her machine does anything other than cause a nuclear meltdown imo. Price nailed it on the head when talking with Angela. She's delusional and obsessed with the project.
watched this live on Sunday and I've been thinking about this finale all week. I'm really going to miss this show. I was struggling a lot with understanding what the hell was going on in the finale, so I'm glad there have been so many articles that have helped with the understanding. the white cars really threw me off and I would love to hear if anyone has any theories as to what they "meant." my best guess is that in this perfect world that the mastermind shoved the real Elliott into, the white cars were just a vehicle (pun intended) to help the viewer know that this world is supposed to be perfect and pure (as white usually represents purity). that nothing could go wrong. much like how clean Washington Township was. not sure if that makes any sense. one complaint about the story that I can't help but shake is that Philip Price is married to Angela's mother in the "perfect world," but Elliott would not have known that Price was Angela's real father, right? Unless I'm missing something? There were hints of Price being her father (especially in the flashback scene with young Angela in season three), but it's never made clear to Elliott. We only know for sure cause Price tells Angela at the end of season three. I could be completely missing something though. I cannot wait to return to this show again. I'll probably wait a few months (definitely not until after I watch the end of Bojack), but I love that I'll be given a brand new lens to watch this show in. but, I loved all of these characters so much, and I'm really bummed I won't get to see them any more. Darlene, Dom, and Angela are all some of the best female characters that I think I've ever seen in television. lastly, I've enjoyed this little community that has been super active during the last season. the subreddit can be a little chaotic with the memes and the theories, but I've appreciated the great conversation and analysis and potential answers that I was able to find in this thread. so, thank you all!
[spoiler*] blahblahblah [/spoiler*] remove * but I think we're far enough along that we don't need to, I doubt anyone is reading this thread without having watched it
Okay! Fuck. I think I loved it. I’m lost. So is perfect Elliot the real Elliot or another personality? Do we/have we ever even met the “real Elliot”? Did any of the shit we watched ever really actually happen? Is Darlene real in the real world? Was the real Elliot in love with Angela/supposed to marry her? Please someone help.
"perfect elliot" is the real Elliot who Mastermind Elliot locked away in his mind in a perfect, painless loop. I don't think Perfect Elliot was ever shown to us, but Darlene at least talked to him when she revealed Vera was back. The only things that were fake were what occurred in the final two episodes in Elliots perfect world. The Elliot we've seen the entire time was another personality, "Mastermind" who was created out of "Perfect Elliot's" anger and who's purpose was to take down E Corp/the rich ELITE and then eventually Dark Army and White Rose. Darlene is real. I think. SO long story short, everything we've seen occurs in the real world until the finale. The Elliot we knew all along only existed for a short period of time, starting a little bit before the first episode. He achieved his goal and with Mr Robot/AlterMom/AlterChild gave total control back to the real "perfect elliot" to live his life.
But even though we refer to him as “perfect Elliot” his true life isn’t really that perfect..it’s just make believe to keep him occupied? So technically we don’t know real Elliot or about his real life beyond what he did as the mastermind. I guess I just struggle to comprehend multiple personality disorder lol how one personality “traps” another and “protects” them from shit that really happens is hella confusing. Is that a thing or just fictional?
well we know his childhood, all the stuff with his father and falling/jumping out of the window are real. That's partially why "Mastermind" Elliot didn't remember it, or remember that Darlene was his sister. But yeah, I only used "perfect" because you did haha. Dude had a real rough life before getting locked away in his mind. As for if that can happen in real life, I have no idea.
Mastermind Elliot does know Price was Angela's father. In episode 2 this season he convinces Price to take down the Deus Group by playing on his anger about Angela, when Price looks shocked Elliot says something like "you think I didn't look into you too?" In other words, he hacked Price cos he hacks everyone
