I felt very similar after the first 2 episodes but I think it really starts to pick up after, with episode 6 being my favorite of the series
That’s good to hear! I’m gonna see it through regardless because I really like Maya Erskine but it’s helpful to hear I won’t be dragging my feet on it the whole time
5 episodes in and I'm enjoying it. Seems like it's picking up, but I've enjoyed the focus on the relationship dynamic through first half of the season.
About to start episode 4, this is fine so far. It’s got a weird tone. Will definitely finish the season at least
Just finished this. I loved it. The back half was particularly good. Loved the Amy Seimetz-directed eps. The finale was great too, but I wasn't huge on how open-ended the very end was, especially if we don't end up getting S2.
I know there’s an issue with people not being able to suspend disbelief but in episode 4 I really can’t get past John running into someone he knows before becoming a spy and they just talk like it couldn’t possibly ruin both of their covers
Or being allowed to keep their regular phones when they were supposed to cut contact from their past lives
I did like the end of episode 4 a lot. Eveything after they finish the super high risk job. That’s the kind of stuff it seems like I’ll mostly be watching this for
Loved the finale. I actually didn’t think that the ending was open ended. She said to John that she only had one bullet left, and when we get the street view through the window you see 4 shots fired. The way they locked eyes gave me the impression that they knew it was the end. Has there been any talk about this being a mini series vs a season 2? For anyone looking for more action like the movie had, the finale definitely brought it. Last 3 episodes were definitely the best.
I read an interview with the showrunner saying that she has ideas for S2, though it all depends on how well the show does. That reading of the ending is likely, though it still feels like they left the door slightly open to them making it out.
I thought episode four was great. The spy aspect can definitely be distracting but it doesn’t really bother me when they talk loudly during jobs and drive way too chaotically for people who should be keeping a low cover. The show doesn’t take itself too seriously during those moments anyway, and it’s not really what I’m here for; the chemistry between Donald and Maya is great and the intimacy feels so real at times, and the overall tone is what I’ve come to expect from Glover and I think the fourth episode was the most successful thus far. I thought the fifth episode stunk, though. Least favorite so far. Will probably finish the series this weekend.
Finally got the time to watch this over the last two days and I thought it was fantastic. The performances and chemistry between Donald and Maya was truly fantastic, I could have watched them for 10 more episodes ( although I definitely read the ending as them dying, it doesn't really make sense any other way; John was basically dead anyway). The cinematography was breathtaking and the action scenes were well-done for the most part, I liked how they weren't really the focus - this show really was about their relationship first and foremost. It was also genuinely really funny and charming throughout the whole thing too I'm a certified Glover stan but I really do think he never misses, I'm so happy with how much I enjoyed this. Definitely more "mainstream"-feeling than some of his other recent work but still kept the artsiness in parts and the social commentary that we've come to expect from this crew at this point
In thought the first episode was cool Just realized the couple in the opening scene is supposed to be Brad and Angelina.
Maya kills it in this. I honestly can't imagine Waller-Bridge doing a better job than here in that role.
Yeah overall I thought this was really good. Definitely not perfect but when the focus was primarily John and Jane’s relationship it was always great.
I feel like I am enjoying this a lot more than some other people in here. This might be my favorite series of Q1 2024 so far. That is likely to change with Shogun tomorrow, but this is ranking pretty high up there for me.
Also the guest casting in every episode is insane I lost it at Dave Attell as the Jewish bodega guy In episode 7.
I'm only 2 episodes in, and I like it, but it's definitely a slower burn than I expected and I am not sure that all the crazy stuff that's happened thus far has landed or just felt like unearned shock scenes. I'm enjoying it enough to keep going, and while the stakes aren't high enough to really care yet, I think the directing and the music, and the 'spy' sequences are cool and point to some great tension down the road (when I'm more invested in the mission and characters).
Finished this awhile ago & forgot to post how much I liked it. As a big fan of Atlanta, I appreciated all of this but especially the parts where they dwell in uncomfortable social situations.
