waves feels like a watered down version of thrice, but not even peak thrice

also the vocals aren't very good at all, especially compared with the s/t

I think Waves is better than any Thrice album, I also think the vocals are way, way, better than the selftitled.

Different opinions, I love both MM and Thrice, I'm positive I'd never come up with any of those above ;P "Waves" is actually one of my favorite albums. I don't like to rank stuff like that, I suppose. I listened to it yesterday on a very long drive, it was the first time in a long time as well, and I still enjoy it as much!

@s12sim Hmm, there's actually plenty of strings on "Waves", and much more of other instruments as well. Even the first single had like a huge string section, the second single on the other hand had cello right in the intro part ;P Maybe you should try giving it one more try ;D

I actually think it's similar to Thrice at given times only (especially parts with screaming), but it also has so much resemblence to their older stuff. It was just something else than whatever had anybody expected after "Foreword". I also remember Greg speaking about writing it to be more live-show-friendly, but it was mostly concerning the length and and the dynamics of the songs.

@s12sim All good, I know where you're coming from with this :) I remember I was also a bit disappointed with that LP after my first listen, which I took through headphones, and it was weird due to the double vocal types approach. Later on I played it through my speakers and liked it much more, got used to it and then grew to love a lot of aspects of it.

I guess they did that with S/T as well - they changed a lot and people were freaking out, some of my friends openly prefered "Waves" and couldn't get into the last one, but it was easier to get near that one quickly in my opinion.

  5. I sort of forgot about Pompeii. Thanks for the reminder. That album (and Assembly) were great

Yeah definitely. Loom is good too but Nothing Happens is one of my favorite albums.

Nothing Happens For A Reason stuck with me the least out of Pompeii's three albums actually. Only one I haven't gotten into.

Low Level Owl is one of my favorite albums ever, try that if you haven't. Such a powerful combination of atmosphere, songwriting, "experimentation", and chops - it also has some of the most epic/cathartic moments ever.

Waves turns 5 today. Along with B&C's Separation they were the first albums that completely took me aback in an awesome year of music in 2011. Still think it's their best work

Great to hear, I love both of these too! Got into B&C a little later - maybe in 2012, whereas I had been listening to MovMou long before that. At first I was a bit disappointed, but it took me 2 or 3 listens to get into it more, now it's one of my favorites as well!

That would be too good this year. I'm so glad we at least had those 2 new tracks, and 2 covers, I'm not aware of anything else having been released lately.

Right now I'm waiting for Greg's projects as a producer to come out - he's finished the Dryjacket LP, and I've spotted him working on new Athletics, which is also great news!

Just heard Gates' new album Parallel Lives. I think anyone who likes Self Titled style Moving Mountains should look out for it. Sounds like a good mix of the two with maybe a hint of Copeland.

last gates record sounded like waves so i hope that progression actually happened

I think so. There's no aggressive vocals, a lot more mellow, two songs are really soft, and two others reminded me of 90s alt/pop rock to be honest haha

likewise, although it will obviously not match it

Probably not, but it's good. And there are people around here who actually think Waves is better than ST...

Damn, I gotta pull that out and listen now.

I just threw on Waves and am amazed at the hate some give it-really good record. Of course, I enjoy the heavier parts a lot, so if you don't enjoy that, I can see the point.

  23. Self titled might be my favorite record period, but the first two LP's do absolutely nothing for me. New Light and the Prawn split are jams though.

Pneuma is their best album. It's fantastic.

Waves is a very generic album in comparison. In fact, the best I can describe it is that it's a less dynamic version of Foreword. Their Self-Titled album is pretty forgettable and I'll never understand the praise its received.

Their split with Prawn is brilliant though.

Their self-titled is up there with TDAG for me. Certainly not forgettable, since people still talk about and listen to it.
