Listening to Waves right now. So good. It has so many elements I love in it. The album feels like it’s a journey towards healing after suffering, anger and frustration to start the record. I know they’ve touched on this before and in previous albums, but they didn’t need to so much passion, intensity in parts and release. I love how Greg’s vocals range. There’s a Dustin-Thricesque vocal quality in the harder parts I live as a Thrice fan. It’s not a copy because he uses the full extent of his voice. The guitar parts sounds are great on this album. The bass punches and the drumming feels like the heartbeat behind the music. Also love the additional of the additional instrumentation and briefly beautiful vocal contribution of Kenny from moneen on The Cascade. Big fan of this record. It just has so much of what I like. Often overlooked is the fantastic acoustic bside Keep Your Head above the Water. Feels like a summary of the album. Almost like a message that is sent as advice that simple at the core.
Agree with everything in the post above @.K. ! Also the acoustic versions of their tracks are amazing, both bonus to Waves and the amazing New Light EP, that nobody seems to mention (?!), which is actually the last thing I've just listened to from them, like this very last week. Ps. guys, it's called FOREWORD ;D and it was the first thing I heard by MovMou, probably making it my favorite release - definitely changed my outlook on post rock and playing this kind of music back then. But I'd have to second the opinion that they just grew stronger with each release. Absolutely!
Pneuma is very close to my heart so it'll always be my favorite. I love the dynamics of that one, how it sprawls from ambient to math rock to folk and more. Lyrics are utterly gorgeous as well. Personally, I don't think Pneuma is sonically too different from the Prawn split. It felt like they might be making a return to that sound, but with the production choices of the s/t. Man I miss them.
From first release to last, everything had something interesting and enjoyable to it. One of those bands that I wish had more albums before they ended.
The prawn split is definitely a mix of the self titled’s ambience with pneuma’s sprawl and intricacies. Those songs are unreal. A full lp with that style would be among my favorite ever albums (granted the self titled is already up there)
I do wish Greg used a little more of his vocal range on self titled and the split, but I can see there was no need to use the Thricesque-Dustin styling in those records. It would have been great if the split was eventually followed up with an album. Would have been a great record I’m sure.
Couldn't imagine any screaming on s/t! It was a good choice, also more of a safe direction, seeing as a lot of people thought Waves to be grating with those vocals (whereas I personally loved it), on their softer side I think they could get more massive and have some spot on shows.
The vocals are what always kept me from really loving the self titled, they sound so dull and lifeless to me. I want to spend more time with it though after getting so much more into Pneuma and Foreward.
Well yeah, so I guess there's always going to be someone who preferes the other choice. I'm happy to really enjoy both of those styles with them, but I'm sure it was also just easier for Greg to keep up with the more mellow stuff. So anyway, did anyone like that New Light EP or not?
Self Titled doesn’t need the screaming or intensity, because they let the guitars and horns do some of that. I just mean in the context of songs, if you start low, let your vocals soar by the end, or just play around. Burn Pile has some, Chords has a bit more of that, and Seasonal has some of that in the backing vocals. I just found the vocal element was more engaging in Waves. That’s the separator between the two records for me.
New Light is a the perfect name for that release. Gives the songs such a different life and the sounds sound great. I always enjoy when bands are brave enough to reinvent theirs songs are still make them sound great.
The vocals on self titled are perfect and could not be more fitting for where the band was at sonically
The vocals, particularly on Eastern leaves on the telegraph session, are one of my main vocal influences for my acoustic stuff... I think it’s serene and matches the instrumental beauty very well. This has been in my top five albums probably since it’s come out, and I’ve said before and will say again the split is amazing and agree that a full length of that style would be the greatest
came in here scared to bump the thread, stoked to see people are still listening. recently rekindled my relationship. the foreward EP is absolutely insane.
Any of you guys ever check out the self titled demo EP before Pneuma came out? The songs are different, kinda interesting to see how they developed. There are videos uploaded on this channel if you're curious.
Shameless self plug but I’m currently in the studio recording an album heavily influenced by the self titled with a hint of Owen/American football vibes (and may have recruited a certain member of a band with ties to Moving mountains to contribute to it ) so if anyone’s interested in following the progress on that feel free to message me (sorry if this comes off the wrong way, just think people will vibe with it when it’s finished!)
Thanks y'all! Eventually I hope to be able to have a thread made for it but for now if anyone has IG you can follow Saint__44 (with two underscores) and I will be posting updates and some clips on there/will follow back! (If this is against the rules I will edit this out lol)
I gotchu ! My plan is to wait, run a sponsored post on here, and hopefully get someone to make a thread for it because I really went deep to make this one it’s a sad album but very cathartic to be creating it
It angers me so much that I missed that tour they did with Thrice in '11. Both my roommates in college were super into Thrice at the time and I really hadnt really gotten into either bands yet. It wasn't until '12 that I really jumped into Waves and got hooked but it was too late by then.. :( Definitely one of the few bands whose music for me really has gotten better over the years. Come backkkkkkk.
Such a good band who I wish had released more records. Waves is awesome. So many great moments on it.
