Eastern Leaves could be a low point vocally, but it never really bothered me. Besides, we need more Swing Set, Hands, and Deathless from this band anyway. That's where Greg truly shines.
no I'd be fine with him singing softly to compliment the music but he doesn't accomplish that for me. He sounds monotone and lifeless. His voice takes me out of the songs and kills them for me. I think his vocals on the Prawn split achieve what he was going for on the selftitled much better.
Quick question: What are the "highlights" of the s/t? I've always found that the 3 songs to look out for on the record are Swing Set, Seasonal, and Eastern Leaves, but I also have a huge soft spot for Burn Pile (my favorite MovMou song) and Hands.
Hands, Seasonal, and Eastern Leaves are my picks for standouts, but Swing Set and Apsides absolutely derserve mentions.
I've always interpreted the "born in your eyes" / "raised in your hands" exchange from verse 1 to verse 2 as someone initially being close to their mother, falling out of touch, and connecting more with their father. Either that or being thankful to both parental figures by mentioning each one in each verse. Probably the latter, really. That being said, I fucking love "I've got a lot of things to learn and things I don't think that I deserve".
Swing Set is the only song on there I genuinely like everything about. I'm still not in love with the vocals but they're fine.
I don't even have the power to ban people but if you say one more dispariging thing about Hands you'll be getting some hands if you know what I mean
So hard to pick a high point on s/t cause every single song is so good. Everyone here has heard the Ansible remix of Under A Falling Sky, right? Ugh, so many feelings. Haha. If there is one single part of the album I sometimes wish Greg would do his loud-sing, I wish there was a layered track of him doing a high octave of the final "So don't cry now, you're my friend in my head but I don't know if you want to be", kind of sitting nicely back in the mix behind the the regular track.
When I talked to Greg at a Foxing show back in March he said he wants to play shows again but it'd be in a different band, not MovMou. According to Nick, when I talked to him in December, it seems like the split was just feeling things out and that they're just going to get together to record music and play shows whenever they feel like it now. Doesn't seem like there's any set plan in motion for MovMou, especially with Josh moving to California now.
Not saying it's not great as it is, the album is perfect from the second it starts until the second it ends IMO, but I'm just saying if there was one place I thought that vocal style would fit, it'd be there. Similar to the "everything together" part of Seasonal.
