Wonder what the difference is between yellow and red/yellow? Only one pressing is mentioned but both are for sale.
I think there a red like dot/splatter in one? But I don’t see pressing info for that version? I had the same thought.
Oh wow can't believe this has been out there for a couple years, never thought this would see the light of day! This is an EP he started recording with Greg back in 2013. Listening to some snippets, I have memories coming back to mind as he would post some studio teasers on Twitter and even livestream the recording sessions back then. Was bummed when it was scrapped so it's relieving to have it in that form, even if it's unfinished. Also, he formed another band with whom he put this out in 2022! Looks like that soundcloud account also contains songs I've been wanting to hear for a decade again. He used to have two or there compilations of demos and unreleased stuff on bandcamp, and it looks like those songs were part of them so I'm psyched to revisit them. Wild that the artist behind two of my formative albums (I owe a chunk of my guitar playing, especially the use of alternate/open tunings to him!) is that unknown. The power of discovering and sharing non-mainstream music through online forums...
This record is incredible btw. I've been revisiting their discography and S/T finally clicked after all these years, as well as the songs on the split with Prawn. It's interesting how much my mind changed as my taste evolved. Waves is actually my least favorite at this point. Hearing them play most straightforward post-hardcore is interesting, especially when I remember they were strongly influenced by Underoath's Lost In The Sound Of Separation, which I do hear throughout the record. But overall it's lacking something I can't put my finger on. It's a bit... dull at times and I find myself gravitating more towards the more post-rock focused tracks, as well as the renditions on the following EP. I don't know if it's nostalgia but I also have a new fondness for Pneuma and Foreword. I still believe those two releases were special, even though I now think S/T and Pruning are on par, albeit in a slightly different register. Guess I'm not just drawn to their post-rock side the most after all. Grateful for their comeback.
I faintly remember listening to one of their instrumentals possibly around when pneuma came out or before I always wondered what song it was
I was in a conversation about the best album covers of the past couple decades and I brought up the self titled. It’s something I’ve never really been able to explain but it’s just a perfect album cover and always resonates still. Then a week or so later I saw the news of the new release and it made it seem even more surreal.
The S/T art is absolutely incredible. It might be one of my favorites of all time. It reminds me a lot of Jimmy Eat World’s Futures, rather than Invented, as both invoke this feeling of uncertain anticipation. Futures looks like the subject is working up the courage to make a life changing and/or difficult call, while Moving Mountains reminds me of a final night you would spend with a loved one (romantic or platonic) before you can’t see them for a while, and the crushing reality hits you that you’re in your last few moments as you’re walking out the porch to see them while they were already outside looking at the hazy view for quite a bit. Sort of like interpersonal Sunday scaries. At least, that’s the vibe I get from tracks like Hudson, which to me feel like navigating a long distance relationship due to traveling (touring?), and a lot of the gracious/sweet/admiring lines sprinkled throughout the entire record (Swing Set, Hands, and Eastern Leaves are big examples of this)
Not trying to be the resident Pneuma defender but the art for that is also my favorite of theirs. Immediately transportive
The variant was supposed to be Red in Yellow, but the Red was unfortunately absorbed into the Yellow, so we just changed the name to be Yellow.
I'm not sure if this will resonate with many of you but there are so many moments in this where it feels like what I always wanted as a follow up to Oceana's Clean Head EP. This album is absolutely beautiful and I'm so glad they are back. I would kill for a repress of both Pneuma and Waves.
Relistened to Waves today—been awhile. As a whole not really my jam anymore tbh. But I can’t deny Tired Tiger and The Cascade are amazing songs.
I'm following the Bandcamp just in case. If I gotta get it from there assuming there are any left, I will.
