I caught that leg too, enjoyed Animals as Leaders a lot more than the first time I saw them. Though that wasn’t the band’s fault, they sounded great both times. Seeing Animals as Leaders and Between the Buried and Me while violently hungover wasn’t the best idea lol.
Every time I have seen animals as leaders they have sounded even better than the last time that would be such a dope lineup moving mountains, obrother, animals as leaders, and thrice
I went to that Thrice farewell tour primarily to see Animals As Leaders, but they had bus troubles that day and didn’t make it to the show lol Saw O’Brother twice and they were amazing both times, but could never really get into the records. I should try again
check out Pnuema. its my fav and one of my all-time favs. Ode was certainly my fav song for a good chunk of my life. I have a lyric tattooed. that said, I connect it so strongly to my youth, I'm interested how it would sound to an adult who hasn't ever heard it before
pneuma is a jawdropping album by any metric but particularly so considering their age when they made it. you can just hear the overwhelming passion surging out of every second of that beast. every album they made was great though
absolutely agree. I love all their stuff, but that one album is fearless, shimmering, and intensely alive, unrepressed in a way that I'm not sure they ever captured again. I like the control, technicality, and solemnity of the s/t, and especially Deathless from the split, which as a song feels like a spiritual older brother to Pneuma, but there was a vibrancy in the debut that's just bursting at the seams with life-affirming emotion
I tried listening to it for the first time in over 10 years it unfortunately it doesn’t hold up for me. Self titled is easily my favorite followed by waves.
Pneuma has grown on me so much over the years, it's easily my favourite album of theirs at this point and one of my all time favourites. Waves isn't that far behind. I never really came around on the self-titled, it just does very little for me.
I've always liked the renditions of Ode and 8105 included on New Light. Feels like a good way to appreciate them if the versions on Pneuma aren't your jam.
This Was The Scene podcast with Greg and Nick Ep. 261: Moving Mountains w/ Greg Dunn & Nicholas Pizzolato
Garden window was always the one for me because of seeing them play on the 2 Thrice tours back to back during that time; the one with La Dispute and MovMou as well as the farewell tour. Great stuff! I'd suggest starting there.
Thanks for the share. Will try to break down the news for those that don't listen to pods, editing as I listen: Greg did the full album by himself and the drummer from The Wonder Years (Mike Kennedy) as a pseudo solo project. But then when he let people hear it he kept hearing "it sounds like MM." So they went back into the studio with Nic (drummer) and just did it as a MM record. Said that that original solo version was totally finished and mastered. Edit 1: They didn't graduate high school until 2007. Everything pre-Waves was just Greg/Nic. Waves is their most collaborative effort. The stuff after Waves was mostly just Greg doing the entire song and then the guys adding here and there. Said they always felt like their timing was off. Either with booking tours or when their music was released, etc. Edit 2: He didn't do a good job of planning the screams for what he would he have to do live. Definitely took its toll on him. Triple Crown - said he couldn't say enough good things about them. The band never made any money on tour. Also they were most popular on streaming when there wasn't any royalties on streaming so just never really made money at all. Edit 3: They always struggled with writing and then actually going in and recording. Would always want to make changes, etc. Self-Titled they knew at the time of the recording it, that they were going to take a step back as a band and not really support it. Said they went to Atlanta and spent a month in the studio and then after they listened to it felt like they were only 40% done. So just kept making so many changes after the fact. Nic said he is just used to Greg's method and waiting months on things and constant changes. Greg said the newest record is the craziest version of his methods. Said they got the mixed/mastered version back and then like a week later was like, I want to change it. Greg struggles a ton with Waves. Some parts that he has a very hard time listening to. Said he doesn't listen to any of the MM discography but has listened to nothing but the new album for the last year. Edit 4: Guy asked them about touring at the beginning of the pod but then never went back and asked them again... bummer. This was recorded in January so they didn't really get into the new album. Greg described the new album as being more songs than just soundscapes.
Ode still is probably their best song, but I can’t get enough of Ghosts, truly gets better every time I listen, this album is gonna be insane
Literally same thing for me on that tour. Rolled up and MM were finishing their set. Then me and my buddy who weren’t familiar with O’B were absolutely blown away by them and how heavy their sound was.
I liked the screams on Waves at the time but if they did those songs on a tour without them I would not mind one bit I gotta hear Cascade and Always Only
I need to listen to Pneuma again, never really connected with it the several times I’ve tried over the years
Love hearing how memorable and formative those Thrice tours off Major Minor were for so many of you in this thread. Me and my group of friends who went still talk about how incredible that show/tour was. I remember feeling "unsettled" by O'Brother's set. It creeped me out in such an incredible way when they kicked into the bridge for Poison. That feeling from a live show hadn't really happened to me before that. I was at the Philly date and made it all the way to the barrier by the time Thrice came on. Met Dustin and OB's lead singer at the end. Appreciate all your stories! I always felt like there was something special about that one and it's cool to hear I wasn't the only one. I think I'm about to go on a bit of a MovMou and OB kick again. Waves and Garden Window respectively made such an impression from that tour that the rest of either band's discography never made a big impression. Think I need to get those 2 on vinyl... Just listened to Garden Window yesterday for the first time in a long time after reading through this thread and it still hits! Also, props to the cliffnotes on the podcast episode. Much appreciated!
Make sure you check out the live version they did for the 10-year anniversary if you haven’t already:
