I mean that, to use your example, I wouldn't consider the G.I. Joe movies to have "fallen into obscurity".

Obscurity implies that not a lot of people know about them. I don't think that works in this instance.

Frankly, I think this whole thread is operating under a faulty premise.

Plenty of people knew about them at the time, and I’m sure if you brought them up then that would trigger the memory of their existence in plenty of people (I would also bet plenty of people *don’t* remember them). But they are obscure now specifically because they have *fallen* into such a state - that if, say, you were to ask someone who was not old enough to experience their release at the time, they would almost definitely have no idea that they ever existed in the first place. That is because they have no absolutely no living memory in the broader mass culture

I don't think this means nearly as much as you're making it sound.

There are a lot of things that exist that aren't obscure that people young or not don't know about because a lot of people don't actively look outside their general experience.

And by that I mean, as an example, I used to work with someone exactly my age who knew nothing about well-known rock bands from the 90s because he didn't generally listen to rock. I wouldn't call those bands obscure based on his experience. He'd just never had a reason to hear of them.

By the same token, a 10 year old may not know that there were two G.I. Joe movies or that a movie called Jumper exists, but I wouldn't expect a 10 year old to know what Dr. Strangelove is either. I wouldn't call that a metric for determining obscurity.

I mean, do whatever, I'm just saying that this thread seems more geared to talk about bad movies or movies we dislike than it is to talk about movies that are legitimately obscure.

I promise I don't care about this nearly as much as this post makes it sound.

If a band was successful in the 90s but then exited the public consciousness and are seldom remembered or mentioned now, then they have fallen into obscurity. That is what the term means. You cannot fall into obscurity without having at least some level of recognition in the first place. You can have an argument over whether something was ever at a point where it wasn’t obscure, or whether something ever actually fell into obscurity, but that is simply a case-by-case basis.

I would say a case where something that is no longer typically remembered by the general public - including people who were around when it was popular - is a pretty clear-cut case of something falling into obscurity. I would bet money that if you brought up GI Joe to Channing Tatum or Joseph Gordon Levitt, they would be very surprised that anyone would even think to mention it to them in 2022.

Additionally, this thread is not titled “Obscure Movie Thread.” It is “Movies That Didn’t Actually Happen.” I feel I explained the criteria in the OP pretty clearly. It is also not a “Bad Movies Thread.” As I said in the OP, a determining factor is often that it is not *so* bad that it has become notable *for being bad*, eg The Room

Now get out of my thread.

Anyway, I still find it amusing that your original post goes out of its way to request bad "fever dream" movies you can't quite remember and then used as an example the two films based on one of the biggest boys' toy licenses in history. Just sayin'.

Hey dude, I generally like your posts, I think your writeups on anime and indie videogames are interesting, but what exactly are you angling for here? Disagreeing with the posting of a given movie is one thing; there are a handful of movies in this thread that I don’t think should count because, at least in my circles, they’re still well remembered. And it’s fun to see those and debate them (or not). More common is that somebody posts a film that has fallen into obscurity that I happen to remember because I really enjoyed it. I thought Jumper and Push were fun. Snow White & the Huntsman is actually a movie I really like a lot, as well as the sequel. The GI Joe movies were cool. And it’s fine if I want to voice those opinions here. But it genuinely seems to me like you’ve come in here (not having participated much in this thread), disagree with or don’t understand the general point of the thread contrary to what most people who are “regulars” here want to be posting, and feel like antagonizing the people who were already having a conversation. I’m just not sure what you’re getting at here, and it’s weird because generally you seem pretty well reasoned.

It’s odd that you’re conflating the toy brand with the movies. GI Joe as a toy brand/kids cartoon is a well remembered source of nostalgia for many people. The live action GI Joe movies, however, made hundreds of millions of dollars and yet, as said I earlier, I would gladly bet money that basically nobody outside of the handful of pop culture-obsessed weirdos like the people on this forum remember them (or to the extent that they *do* remember them at all, they likely couldn’t give even the most basic plot summary of remember, say, who the main actors/characters were). This is what makes them Movies That Didn’t Actually Happen.

Also it’s a thread with a flimsy/fun premise. Post whatever the hell you want in here and anyone is free to say “hey that doesn’t apply, I loved that movie you geek” who gives a care

I was not intending to antagonize anyone or ruin the thread in any way. I am not trying to be hostile; I come in peace.

I made a one sentence observation and, asked to explain myself, ended up writing way more about the subject than I ever intended.

I'm not angling for anything. I don't have a goal. I just had a passing thought about the situation and wanted to express it because I thought we could laugh about what I interpreted as the oddity of the situation.

I misjudged how my words would be interpreted. That's on me. I meant for this to be a comedic light-hearted moment, not a serious argument about something I really don't care that much about.

That last post was meant to try to redirect things back into something funny. I failed. We've gone too far into the abyss. We can't go back home.

Tim Riggins had quite the year in 2006, apparently. I never saw The Covenant, but I was checking out Sabastian Stan’s IMDB and had completely forgotten that this garbage existed.

Against my better judgement, but in the interest of full disclosure, the first G.I. Joe movie will always hold a space in my memory because I really liked how the bad guys won.

You don't see a lot of big budget licenses films taking a move like that, and I kind of admire that.

That's not why I've been a raving lunatic, but now that we're here...
