it wasn't actually heavily promoted, it was a very organic kind of build. Apple TV, I think, but it was mostly word of mouth kind of stuff that spread the word around. The nom was kinda a surprise

there's a difference between literally every movie mentioned in that post, that are quite popular and big movies he just doesn't like lol, and movies that are in 3-for-1 DVD collections in walmart for sale after six months, which is what I think of when I think of this thread

This Means War made over 150 million dollars in theaters. It's about what happens when the press moves on.

I think Steve's right that those films don't belong in this thread. But Tetra's right that they will mostly be forgotten.
    Forgotten =/= "Didn't Happen"

I mean, technically this entire thread is built on a faulty premise because every single one of these movies "happened".

There are two types of films featured in this thread.

    1. A film that, despite having some known actors and seemingly having a decent budget, was either a bomb, never went to theaters at all, and no one ever saw it.
    2. A film that was a decent enough success at the time, but no one remembers anymore because it was bland overall.

We started with mostly the first type of film but have generally moved into the second.

    CODA was an enjoyable movie.
An Education was also a movie nominated for a best picture that I feel has since been forgotten.

I will add that the pandemic ruined my movie going experience. I’d watch The Oscars every year since the early 2000s. I’d see all the hyped up award-worthy movies from November to February. But the last movie I saw in theaters was Parasite in early February 2020. This is the 2nd straight year I’m not excited about any movie nominated for big awards shows..

Many Best Picture nominees would definitely qualify for this thread if not for the fact that they were BP nominees. Who would honestly remember Crash today if it didn’t get the attention that it did at the time? The Theory of Everything? Green Book?

Unlike generic summer blockbusters that make millions of dollars but then disappear into the ether, these sorts of the films have the benefit of being permanently engraved on a shortlist of award nominees that somewhat inherently makes it impossible for them to have “never happened.” It’s like a cheat code for avoiding fading into *complete* obscurity. People will always at least *know of* these movies, even if nobody ever watches it again once this particular award season is over

same for me BUT I’ve lost any interest in the academy as an institution

If we’re including “good films people liked that have gotten forgotten over time” you can basically include all of film history that isn’t capeshit, so…

Has this world stopped asking what it's thinking?

Hugely problematic movie that I saw at a very young age. Rewatched it last year and was legit taken aback by how mean-spirited it is. I highly recommend the With Gourley & Rust podcast episode about it!

The whole Jack Frost thing was confusing because the Michael Keaton family movie with the same name came out around the same time.

For a very long time I thought those two were the same movie and was confused how/why Batman became a villain. And then when I finally watched it (the horror one) was confused why I didn’t see Keaton anywhere.
