I absolutely loved this movie as a kid. Rewatching as an adult with my kids, the script and story definitely doesn’t hold up nearly as well as I remember, but I still love the animation. That said, several years ago I discovered that there had been three previous attempts at Little Nemo, each one with a “pilot” film you can find on YouTube. One of them was done by Yoshifumi Kondō, who is now known as one of the greats from Studio Ghibli. You can see what his version would have been like here before he left the project, and it’s definitely a missed opportunity:

The other one I really liked was done by Osamu Desaki, which you can see here:

Desaki also left the project and it’s a damn shame purely based on his depiction of the Nightmare King as this pulsing red eye in the sky, which is utterly terrifying.

Really wanting someone to acknowledge this. I'm not the only one who remembers this, right?

I know it's not a movie, but it's still relevant, dammit.

Had not heard of those. I grew up with Dr. Brain and Dr. Quandary.

Does anyone remember that they made a prequel movie to the Sopranos? Feels like this was a quickly forgotten one

Hopefully we can all agree that this movie does not belong here because it’s awesome:

Aw god lol. So when my wife and I first started dating she told me I just absolutely had to watch this amazing, totally hilarious movie that she and her brothers grew up with called Surf Ninjas. I had honestly never even heard of it. So we sit down to watch and, because I did not grow up with this thing, she’s cracking up and then turning to me to see my reaction and I’m sitting there like

and she was so disappointed lol. So then a few years later her brother starts dating the girl who would one day become his wife and he tells her there’s this amazing, totally hilarious movie he just has to show her…

…and her reaction was exactly like mine. So now it’s a running joke that my wife and her brother will purposely bring this movie up all the time and quote it endlessly around us while my sister in-law and I just stare at each other like

For millennials (or any generation), if there’s a then-contemporary movie you loved as a kid that’s marketed for that age, there is little chance someone your age as an adult who sees it for the first time will not like it. I am in the camp that I do have fond memories of Surf Ninjas but it has been years since I saw it.

And I’m now realizing something somewhat weird…I’ve always had a random attraction to Kelly Hu when I’ve seen her in movies as an older teenager and adult. And yeah obviously she’s an attractive person but I’m also not usually one to get all oogly eyed over a celebrity, never been the guy to have posters of famous attractive people and etc. So it’s a bit weird that she always sorta “catches my eye” whenever I’ve see her in anything.

So I obviously went down the surf ninjas rabbit hole here and realize Kelly Hu is the love interest for Ernie Reyes in the movie. And I definitely remember thinking she was really pretty as a tween boy watching that movie lol, so definitely a childhood crush of sorts that seemed to leak into my adulthood and I never even realized it until just now.

From what I understand, it’s because that’s something money just can’t buy. I guess that’s why you don’t see many of them around.
