lol, my boss was telling me that people have been going to the box office and using the Movie Pass card to load the money onto a gift card. We are still getting the money, so it’s not exactly unethical, but it’s some shakey territory. Do that every day for a month and you’ve got like $400 on a gift card. Edit: it’s possible this has already been mentioned
It’s certainly taking advantage, but it’s still just using the money offered to them to go towards the theater. If it was possible to convert a gift card to cash then it’d 100% be wrong. But here, I mean it’s shady that’s for sure, but it’s honestly pretty smart lol. It’s weird, my GM is so adamant about the demise of Movie Pass and when I asked him why, he didn’t really have an answer. We get all of their money so, who cares?
it is taking advantage/unethical because one of moviepass' only hopes of making this a long term venture is selling demographic/user data, which is polluted further every time someone picks a random movie in the app and then does something else instead. plus it's blatantly against the Terms of Service so that alone lol they're not and they've been vocal about knowing they need to take the loss to get their foot in the door and gain some leverage
Yeah, the gift card thing is 100% fraud. Very unethical and it's crazy to me that some people don't see it that way.
it's definitely one of those rare times when i legit feel bad if i were to take advantage of the system.
I wonder if people could be prosecuted for credit card fraud for doing shit like this. It is technically a Mastercard (albeit a debit card) - I mean, I know it's super unlikely and would probably be pretty difficult for them to catch you/actually make a case against you but..
I really don’t think so. Maybe they could charge the theater for something for allowing it. But then again, if the credit card system is outside the box office and the customer slides the card themselves, then I don’t think the theater would be held accountable.
Then Movie Pass needs to figure out how make it specific to movies cause I doubt anyone would get charged fraud for this Edit: I don’t mean specific in the ToS, I just wonder if they can have it specifically tailored to movie tickets
A dude my boss knows bought a drink at 7-11 with the moviepass card, and then MP cancelled his account instantly
I'm just trying to figure out how that dude would not realize the charge would show up as 7-11. unless this is some weird scenario where there was a 7-11 inside a theater??
Instead of driving 75 miles to see I, Tonya when it opened in KC last week I decided to wait because my theater told me they'd have it on the 11th. Today they told me they aren't getting it.
Ordered mine today. I was on the fence because my favorite theater does not accept it but every other single theater within a 15 minute drive does so I finally pulled the trigger.
a co-worker who got me interested was also trying to tell me a way to cheat the system and I was like nahh pass.
I ordered mine Sunday night and got an email Tuesday saying its on its way. So should I expect it within the next week or so or closer to end of month? Ive read it took some people over a month to receive theirs.
I also got my email yesterday "your card will arrive in about 2 weeks". Not holding my breath... but also holding my breath. A 3 screen theater that takes it is literally a 4 minute walk from my front door.
It all depends. It took me about 6 weeks to get mine, but I ordered right when they dropped the price to $9.99 - I've heard other people say they got theirs right away, so who knows...
