See, I'm all got cracking down hard on this stuff, but I do wonder if in this situation some punishment, combined with education would go further. He didn't say it with any malice and it wasn't aimed at anyone, so it falls more into an ignorant way of just dropping it online (something I'm pretty sure is common amongst younger gamers). So now he's received a punishment, but he probably hasn't learned why it's a problematic thing. Only that it is. That being said, RB were in a pretty unenviable position, because even if they did fine him or race ban him pending some training/education, it would look appalling as a statement. I think Chelsea have been trying similar things with fans who have been shopped for being racist, because just banning them doesn't stop the problem, it just moves it outside the football ground. We might see the same here, because if Vips is talented enough, someone else will come for him. Look how many chances fucking Dan Ticktum got...
I'd argue that any racist slur is full of malice, regardless of whether it's directed at anyone or not.
tbh i do think they should have sent him to some sort of sensitivity training. then sacked him. maybe that is what happened, but it should really be made clear that racist remarks have no place in the sport, which it has. now, if vips was verstappen talented would he be getting the sack or just sensitivity training?
