I will maintain until the end of my life that Panic Stations was led by the two worst possible single choices and it just tanked the album. If they had led off with Anything At All and then maybe released a song like Broken Arrow or really literally any song but TKO and Lose Control, the album would've been received very differently. I'm not saying people would've been praising it, but they would've thought it was a much more solid effort. Minds were made up when they led with the two worst songs on the album.
Go rules! I love listening to it in the fall/winter. It's not a summer album to me, like the majority of their others.
Panic Stations feels like an amalgam of their first 3 records but unfortunately while it succeeds at being a jack of all trades "heres what MCS do well all in one album!" kind of thing, it ends up feeling watered down at times. that said i still enjoy it and hindsight has been kind to it imo Go is a perfect album and really cemented how versatile MCS were, its a shame that history will probably remember them as "that pop punk band with the synths" because they really touched a lot of different sonic palettes. EIIKM is very pop/electronic and it has some unique influences on it like The Cure and Ben Folds Five, MDL has post-hardcore finger prints all over it with more aggressive guitars, darker lyrics, and even the slower songs have a quick pace and ferocity to them. Go is so indie rock and I love it, mellower acoustics and more somber tones all around. IATM has a lot of that 90s alt rock spunk to it and CTTM is pretty much a perfect pop rock/pop punk/emo album.
One thing I love about this band is that every record has a case as someone's favorite and least favorite. MDL & EIIKM are obviously the best though
Tier 1: CTTM/MDL Tier 2: EIIKM/IATM Tier 3: Go/PS But like let's be very clear: Go and Panic Stations are incredible albums.
"Go" is great. I haven't revisited anything from PS besides "I Can Feel You," which IMO is one of their best songs.
Gonna have to go four tiered to truly reflect my thoughts. EIIKM/CTTM (10) MDL/IATM (9) Go (8) PS (6)
Mines exactly the same as @mattfreaksmeout Also it wasn't until the brackets in here that I actually realised that PS is actually a good album.
I still haven't gone back to it, but my music taste is a little different these days, and I suspect they wouldn't really resonate with me anymore.
One day, you’re all going to look back and realize go is great, and you’ll never get back these years you’ve spent in the dark
