yeah I know but Inside Out is considered, and part of the vinyl, as an official bonus track even if it came out in like 2013. The MCS subreddit has a post that has some mp3s of it and other bonus tracks! Its really great. The song has a very dark, chuggy kind of feel to it but also a very Weezer guitar chord progression. the opening lyric is one of my favorites just because of how Justin sings it: "They dont have a word for people like me"

i always knew Justin was a HUGE Weakerthans fan since you can hear their influence all over the bands catalog, but hearing the band cover possibly the best Weakerthans song is a huge treat. Between that and the Rilo Kiley cover its safe to say Justin and th band have good taste haha

theres a real good post on the MCS subreddit (which I recommend checking its quite an active band subreddit) that compiles pretty much every song the band has ever recorded. The two EPs before IATM and some demos are all worth checking since theyre surprisingly sharp and not as rough as I would think demos from that era would be, although they do sound a lot like IATM so take that how you will. Also the songs from a few of the 7"s which are all pretty good, the covers theyve done like Left & Leaving, Pictures Of Success, Here Comes The Sun, etc. The Major League and Making Moves EPs, the handful of one-off songs theyve done, and the albums worth of bonus tracks from all of their albums. Theres also some live recordings, alternate takes, and acoustic versions but im usually not super interested in having that stuff in my library.

Bottom Feeder is probably my favorite song of all the bonus tracks and non album songs. Its downright heavy, almost has a little of that post-hardcore influence they showed off on IATM and parts of MDL.

I've always said that MCS probably has the best b-sides of any band I listen to. So many awesome one-off tracks and covers. Personal favorite would be their cover of Limbeck's The Sun Woke the Whole State. @irthesteve knows what's up.

MCS and Thursday (two of my favs RIP ) have probably my favorite b-sides of artists I listen to, so yeah totally cosigned.

Btw I was re-reading through the thread and I noticed I mentioned that "Delirium" was the only MCS song I didnt like. Well, thats change I actually quite love that song these days haha. That bridge redeems the somewhat grating verses but even I cant help but hum along to "theres a stain, theres a stain, theres a stain on the floor" nowadays

It's funny I think someone else has mentioned that the bridge saves that song but that's easily the worst part for me and I like the verses a fair amount in that song.

Also The Worst Part is my favourite MCS b-side and one of my favourite songs of all time.

god damn it jakob you just have to come in here and get me riled up. hey bud glad youre here im falling back in love with this band

Its interesting hearing Justin talk about Go and EIIKM. Hes always said he loves those records and doesnt regret them or anything, but the biggest issue with them (for him) is how the songs translate live. I remember somewhere, I think it was one of those Rank Your Records posts, where he said that Go songs and to a lesser extent EIIKM songs just kinda kill the momentum. When I saw them for the CTTM10 tour they played Circuits And Wires and Antonia for the second set which was a treat, but then just played songs from IATM and MDL to fill that space between. Wouldve been really neat to hear Timelines or Happy Anniversary or Last Night or hell even The Conversation in a live setting.

I know my old blog post is on the first page somewhere, I'm still really proud I wrote that in honor of CTTM and as my own mini eulogy for the band. It was so cool seeing them live at CTTM10 and them actually mentioning me on stage and dedicating "Hangman" to me :')

they also dedicated Antonia to a girl who wanted to hear it for her birthday, so they sang happy birthday and then Justin said "actually ya know what fuck you because Antonia has so many words I have to remember! why do you hate me!" but of course it was all jokes and they played it pretty flawlessly. In fact the only song Justin flubbed was "Her Words Destroyed My Planet", he forgot the second verse lol

another random thing because im on a real big MCS bender so ill be bumping this post and being annoying feel free to engage or ignore i wouldnt blame you for doing the latter

I never realized Time Turned Fragile was from Justins dads perspective. For some reason I thought it was a continuation of the relationship dichotomy with his at the time girlfriend but nope. Makes the "Metal bands I could not stand" line even funnier and makes the last half of the song even sadder

    Haha, I don't intentionally disagree!

I'm probably biased because it's my favourite but the best time I've had at a MCS show was when they played EIIKM in full. Plus I think the crowd was more into the album cuts like Last Night, The Conversation, Antonia because they came for the full album. Their biggest songs live are definitely IATM/CTTM cuts though. People go nuts for those songs, ha.

Yeah, I remember when I first saw an interview with Justin explaining that and it just took the song to a whole new level for me.

yeah for some reason idk why but I guess Justin and the band felt that their fans didnt WANT to hear the EIIKM/Go songs live? Like, I mean yeah theres definitely people that stopped with CTTM but they for sure have a huge dedicated fanbase that loves all those albums yknow? Everyone lost their mind for Antonia and I was hoping that would spur them to play something else from EIIKM.

That one and Chase This Light are the two retrospectives I'm most looking forward to writing this year, I think.

I would be okay with a set based primarily around those two albums. Haha

gdi one of these days im going to convert you to Team CTTM :P

but i totally get it. i totally get people that like the more indie rock/indie pop vibes of those albums and just prefer that songwriting.

maybe Jason will let us team up and do a podcast episode for those two lol. "hey everyone welcome back to Encore im joined by the wonderful Craig Manning and also special guest the biggest dork on the website Kenneth "CoffeeEyes17" Evans to gush about EIIKM and CTL!"

    @Jason Tate, we've got a hall-of-fame level idea here.

I've always felt like those two albums were really good parallels. Both were very poppy follow-ups to classics, both were kind of written off by a lot of fans at first, and both have become very well-respected albums in their respective bands' catalogs. Oh, and they're both crushing while being some of the catchiest records ever.

real talk if Jason ever did open up Encore to having "user guests" id love to be on an episode to just babble, especially for those two albums haha.

oh yeah very much so. its funny how they both kinda made completely different "classics" with CTTM being this aggressive, sugary, synth filled emo/pop punk album and Futures being a dark, colder, rock/indie rock album and then they both followed up with a much poppier, cleaner record that like you said was initially written off by so many. I'm glad theyre getting the love they deserve.
