Purposely holding off on listening to the newer singles so the album will feel fresher. Very excited for this
man, I didn’t know… I also am listening to their record for the first time. Wow. How did I miss this one.
I don't get any CTTM from Particle Physics but I agree with whoever said this could have been right after MDL. The chorus is extremely catchy and I love how Justin's voice sounds. The singles are a bit hard to rank right now for me. I think roughly: Particle Physics She Is Afraid Your Days Are Numbered You Know Who The Fuck We Are But songs tend to move around depending on my mood. None of them have hit like Stop Talking did for me but they're all solid so I'm super excited for the album as a whole. I think it's going to be a good one.
Oso Oso added as an opener on the KC date. Praying that Say Anything somehow magically drops off and it’s just those two.
I am struggling to see how Say Anything at this point is bigger than Motion City Soundtrack. I rally want to go to the Salt Lake show but I really really dont want to see Say Anything
Say Anything, despite Max being a giant tool, made one of the most formative albums for a lot of millennials especially with the songs Alive With The Glory of Love stealing the show. I feel like Motion City, although they have more monthly listeners and some bigger songs with listens/views didn't quite have the cultural impact for some reason. A lot of this is just my two cents of course. My personal anecdotal information is that whenever I've mentioned Say Anything or played a song from Is A Real Boy more people have recognized that then anything off of early MCS albums. It also could literally be a case of "we hear more stuff about Say Anything because of Max and his shit so he stays in the conversation more" but I really don't know.
I always thought MCS were the bigger band. I read Alt Press when I was a pre-teen and I specifically remember seeing MCS in there a lot, but have no recollection of anything related to SA. I know that’s not the best basis, but I just thought I’d throw in my two cents
I think Say Anything's name also just got thrown around a lot more because of some controversies and marriages like Sherri to Max after Sherri and Chad Gilbert. I feel like no one I've ever met has known MCS haha but that's always a good opportunity to show them a great band they've never heard before!
At Four Chord on Sunday, more people were waiting in front of the other stage for Alkaline Trio than there was for during Say Anything.
Definitely think Say Anything were the bigger band once upon a time. I would imagine yhere may be more demand now for MCS to come back now than there is for Say Anything to continue. I'm sure folks have reached out to Justin/MCS about the Say Anything stuff/ it probably doesn't help that 1) they seem to go back, 2) the most publicly concrete stuff about Max out there is the grifting (not including whatever he's saying on stage now) and 3) a lot of the folks going after Max (not everyone) is part of a terribly insane para social snark subreddit, so any claims feel...a bit stilted.
MCS was always bigger than Say Anything. Sold more records, landed bigger tours, got more airtime on TV… @Jason Tate am I crazy?
MCS was huge when I was in high school 04-08. Only heard of Say Anything during college and due to this site.
maybe L.G.F.U.A.D comes close but wow, i can get sexual too is a bigger hit so more people know of say anything? that's just my guess.
Maybe I have critic's brain. MCS was generally loved but I feel like ...Is a Real Boy really put SA into this almost BN-level of (at the time) respectability and hype.
I give the edge to MCS, but they're pretty damn similar. My Dinosaur Life charted at #17 on the Billboard 200, while Say Anything hit #25.
i only ever cared about mcs but was always reading analysis of both. from my outsider perspective, it felt like mcs was adored for two records, loved for another 2 or 3, then fell off noticeably on the 6th/final one while maintaining a general goodwill. adversely it felt like the period of time of adoration was shorter and more intense for say anything but then the falloff/fan reception was way more drastic and sustained (and potentially maxed out) to this day lmao
Anecdotally, a lot of friends who have not kept up with this scene at all since high school went to the IARB anniversary tour, but not any MCS tour in the last few years.
I think this is true. There was way more lore around the creation of IARB and the band really centered around the cult of personality that was Max. I feel like that eroded away after their attempts at major label stuff didn’t quite land and Max tried doing different stuff, while also spiraling out. MCS seemed to always be the underdog, but had a more consistent sound and dynamic.
IMO SA had one undeniable album in them (with the following two being decent to good) and MCS had 3-4 undeniable albums (and the new one is shaping up to be that way too). MCS deserves to be the headliner every night. Especially since they still give a shit about their performance at shows. Max phones it in and vapes up a storm every night and doesn’t try.
Also Fred Mascherino plays with SA and recently rejoined TBS since John Nolan had surgery, and he’s been the redeeming factor of both bands in recent memory.
