I just think it's really funny to hear someone say "when you've made your 'best thing' just stop. Dont have any more fun and don't do what you love."

Especially when that "best thing" is totally subjective.

  7. Exactly my thoughts. Should Jimmy Eat World have just stopped after writing Clarity? No, because then we wouldn't have gotten Futures.

and if they'd stopped there we wouldn't have Chase This Light which is my favourite.

Haven't fully caught up in this thread, and likely just adding to the same commentary into the void, but:

It was a pretty big moment in coming to terms with the fact that my favorite bands are not going to capture me nearly as much as they did in my formative years. And it's actually a scientific fact that nothing will affect you as much as the factors surrounding you at that age! You were going through so many changes at that point in life and those pieces of media and elements at that time literally become a part of you.

    And that's OK.

I would rather have my favorite bands have fun and put out music because I know I'm going to enjoy it in some capacity. Jason said it earlier, but as you grow up, the bands and albums put out begin to take on different meanings in your life. Like when starting a new job and "X" band came out with "X" album. It latches on in that sense and becomes a cool part of your history.

Understanding that a seasoned band has passed their magnum opus doesn't mean they can't still put out cool tunes that you connect with. Nothing will ever top blink's Untitled for me because of how much I connected with it as a 14 year old. But damn, I'd be lying if I said I was never excited for a blink album after that. I truly still feel like a kid on Christmas when their album lead-ups happen.

  10. Yup exactly.

We all have our personal favorites. There's people out there whose favorite Blink album is Neighborhoods.

Whether or not we agree on a band's "best" album, we should at least all agree that we want our favorite bands to keep making music, be successful, and make new and existing fans happy for as long as they possibly can, as long as the band is still enjoying it. Even if you don't connect with a later album, it doesn't change the earlier albums you love, and it doesn't mean that someone else will connect with a newer album that you don't like.

It's kinda like the "Don't make a sequel or reboot of this movie. You're ruining my childhood!" argument. No it isn't. Just don't watch it. No one is forcing you to watch a new Air Bud sequel.

we had a similar conversation come up in the TSL thread last month, gonna quote my post from that thread, although it’s mostly just an echo of what a lot of other posters here are saying

I'm in my 40's now and music can still floor me. "Never Enough" and Sam Fender's new record will be staples in my ears for the rest of this year and 20 years from now.

And I find out most of my new discoveries from this damn website. It's one of the best things I spend money on every single month.

After a year or two where I felt like I wasn’t finding much new music I loved like I used to, I went out of my way to check out more new music than ever before.

I listen to a brand new album from that year every single week, and it’s led to me finding artists I absolutely love, like Sam Fender, Joey Valance & Brae, Origami Angel, One Step Closer, Gang Of Youths, and more.

The new music that makes you feel really something is out there, but it might just not be where you’re looking. I have even found out I like some country and jazz, genres I thought I hated.

For the record, a lot of bands I used to love when I was younger are putting out music I just don’t think is very good (Good Charlotte, Laura Jane Grace, Frank Turner, TBS). But that’s fine, I have the old stuff still. That will never leave. MCS are one of the few, alongside The Wonder Years maybe, that are still giving me music I really connect to, and that’s pretty special.

Maybe this speaks to a lack of maturity on my part but I still get excited the way I did as a youth (currently almost 38) for new music from the bands of my formative years. Some don’t hit the same for me and I’ll give an example…

I loved Vaxis Act II. And when Vaxis Act III came out it didn’t hit the same for me. I was a huge fan of the more dance pop vibe of Vaxis Act II and was disappointed that III kind of moved away from that BUT with time some tracks grew on me. But II still reigns supreme for me. I also wasn’t a fan of Go or Panic Stations from MCS. I thought some tracks were good, but something felt different with those albums. Can’t quite put my finger on it. However, this new album is hitting all the right notes for me.

I guess my point is maybe there are people who just don’t feel that feeling with bands they liked on their new stuff maybe because nothing is hitting the same for that individual any more.

I’m just piggy backing on Jason’s viewpoint that it’s an individual’s problem. I feel bad because I wish everyone felt the way I do about new music in general. The joy I get from experiencing new music must be akin to what a religious person feels during a spiritual awakening.

I just discovered Bilmuri this Spring and his most recent album American Motorsports 400cc edition. And I did not have liking a country/pop/rock/metal/with some sweet saxophone on my bingo card. Anyways rant over. Apologies for this wall of text.
