Set against the backdrop of 1950s New York, Motherless Brooklyn follows Lionel Essrog, a lonely private detective afflicted with Tourette's Syndrome, as he ventures to solve the murder of his mentor and only friend, Frank Minna.

carried in the arms of cheerleaders

That was my first thought as well. Not sure why that was needed.

I watched this and actually really enjoyed it, but I don't understand how this story would take place in 1999 in the book... I'm assuming there were major changes to the actual plot aside from just changing the time period. Also got me to do a bunch of research on Robert Moses, which was a name I was completely unfamiliar with.
