Didn’t really do it for me. I’m not the biggest MK fan though. But this felt more like a made for TV movie than something that would be an actual release.
I really enjoyed this. Always been a fan of the games but never deeply involved in the lore. Honestly, not nearly as much gore or techno as I was expecting haha. I certainly wasn’t looking for some sort of revolutionary story telling, or deep character building and I thought what they did was just fine. I’ll happily take as many sequels to this as they can muster!
Hopefully the focus moving forward is fight choreography, action setpieces, fun dialogue, and creative use of gore. Especially practical effects and real stuntwork. Blow shit up for real, hire legit martial artists and stunt doubles to pull off insane feats of physicality, etc. There's a solid framework for a fun martial arts + action + fantasy movie here, just gotta take it to the brink.
Trying to talk myself out of buying MK 11 Ultimate because i'm terrible at fighting games and it doesn't have Ermac in it anyway
I thought this was a ton of fun! I loved how they made Scorpion/Sub Zero such a focus. My main issue was the pacing. Though not surprising since it’s the same studio who brought us IT pt2. That flawless victory, and the final fight were both hype af.
Yeah now that I’ve slept on it, everything With Kung Lao, Kano and Sub-Zero was on point. Hope it makes bank and we see an improved sequel.
This was a lot of fun, and about what I would expect given the source material. Hoping for more down the line.
I thought it was alright. Definitely felt more like a video game than a movie which I’m cool with. The one death on the good guys’ side made me sad, he was definitely my favorite character in terms of badassery.
I think two things: The 2010 short film is full of 2010s gross-out, edge lord stuff, but I think it’s a better execution of this because Michael Jai White could act circles around this cast and the director knows where to put the camera in a fight and not cut away every two seconds. As said before, I feel like the “Power Rangers” reboot is still the best example of taking ‘90s cheese, keeping the goofiness and fan service of it while giving us characters that we at least marginally care about and a cast that seems engaged with the material. I feel like that can be done with this, but they don’t really care.
ok, so my thoughts: yes, the dialogue is very bad most of the time and it is largely a very dumb movie. with that being said, it is also a lot of fun and I am honestly shocked how much I enjoyed it Kano and Kabal were by far my favorites Sonya getting her mark was such a great moment SCORPION!!! so many great fatalities. how do you even choose a favorite?
Sonya vs Kano might be the best fight choreography-wise. Great grappling moves by Sonya and the film angles worked well.
I hope so. Love Baraka. I don’t even think we get a tournament in a sequel lol. It’ll probably be more recruiting fighters and a third film might have one. I can see Mileena returning in a sequel if Shao Khan comes in because she’s part of his guard. And Syzoth/Reptile return as ya know, an actual ninja. Shao Khan coming in would essentially bring in Jade, Motaro and Rain if they stick even somewhat close to the original timeline. Reiko is already fucking rekt.
it's interesting that the studio wanted a new character that wasn't in the games to be the protagonist, only to then have him exist entirely as this trope of the underdog fighter. he was easily the worst part
This sucked but also kind of ruled. The scorpion/subzero fight was a lot of fun. Main character sucks shit. Kano pretty much carried the movie. Would definitely be interested in a sequel, seems like they could improve on this pretty easily
I hope an increased budget and time spent absorbing all the main criticisms can give us a better sequel
